Should I use 10w30 or 10w40 engine oil in this drive? Whats the concensus in using synthetic oil in an engine with some hours on it. My engine has an 8 qt oil pan so th is would be expensive. Any benefit?

Raritan,
I use 10W40 in my Volvo drive. Also, I use Mobil 1 sythetic in all my gasoline engines. I'm very pleased with the results. A good source for synthetic oil FAQ's is the Amsoil web site. I think it's Amsoil.com

I had a 1973 18 2+3 that with a Volvo 270 and ran 10W30 for 5 years without any problems. Sounds like either is fine...
I think that the 270 cooled the oil by using the prop shaft to make the oil flow aound the water intake area.

Your right for the original spece. Later for V8 use Volvo recomendes 75-90 gear oil. My 16 ran for 5 years that way than cam horsepower, changed to Amzoil 75-90. not any drop in speed. My Corsican with a 290(same gears as the 270) yses Amzoil. From my racing that stuff works. as for Cooling the Volvo cools from the intake of raw water, neet design. oil circulation is done byu the prop shaft, the pump is on it.
