Can someone explain to me what exactly a water crossover does. As it is I can't see the need for a circulating pump on a marine engine with a raw water pump.

I replaced the water pump on my 350 with a crossover from Stainless Marine. The reason I did it was because I also replaced the exhaust manifolds with aftermarket center-rise style and it was a lot easier to plumb without the octupus thermostat housing that Mercruiser put on.
The way I understand it is that the sea pump provides all the flow and pressure to move the water through the block, coolers, and exhaust. I have a TRS outdrive so my sea pump is quite large. It also has a thermostat with a bypass so the temperature is somewhat regulated. I have heard they provide better cooling by eliminating "hot spots" because of the higher flow and you don't waste power turning the circulation pump. I think they may be on new engines because it is cheaper to get the pump from GM then for Mercruiser to build a crossover.
