I was having a talk with my mechanic today, and he mentioned that I could probably use some bigger K-planes on my Blackhawk. The ones that I have are 280's (I believe). He told me that K-Planes are made that are actually over three feet long and taper to 4 inches wide at the end. The narrow tip keeps them from biting so hard when you initiailly put the tabs down but you still have the control of the wider tabs if you continue to lower the tabs. He told me that the tabs would stick out about as far as my Blackhawk drive. Has anybody heard of these big K-planes? He told me that they are about $300 apiece. I couldn't find any references to them on the Internet.

Greg, the next size up are 380s and they are 30" I believe. I replaced my 150s with 280s and it made a huge difference. I don't think I would want to go longer than the 280s for fear of stuffing or hooking the nose.

Greg,

What did you find out with your drive? I hope it was nothing major.

The mechanic is looking at the drive either Monday or Tuesday, so I will know more then. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it is just a clutch. In regards to the longer K-planes, the mechanic said that there is much more control with the longer but narrower K-plane. Instead of an eight inch tip being pushed into the water, the longer ones have a four inch tip that doesn't bite as much initally. I might give them a try.

Greg, if you try them let me know how they work. I could have bought the 280s or the 380s. I was considering the 380s until I saw(or at least noticed) a set of 380s on a thirty something foot powerquest. They are huge. What you are saying about the 4" tip makes sense but they are still out there 11" farther which could cause a nose "stuff and hook". At the very least they would look radical. Good for another 40 or 50 "trailer hp"!!! :D

Greg,
I would be interested in your 280 plates if you go with the longer ones. I have the shorter 150's and from what Blackhawk says I need the 280 ones.

Greg, it took me awhile but I found this page that will give you some illistrations of the different plates. wbateman, if you have the blackhawk hull with the rocker in it I would highly recommend the 280s. It was the best mod I have made so far. I can run much flatter in the "confused" waters.

Bill,

I'll take your 150's, if you chose to move up...

Guys...

380's on a 22' boat is downright dangerous.... 280s would be as big as I would ever contemplate going.... if you need 380's on a 22' boat you need to really look at why you boat is handling the way it is. I would consider an extension box, as much better and safer alternative, or have a little of the rocker removed from the hull.....

Also, 380's are not $300 but more like $2500 for set...

Woodsy, Greg is just talking about the bottom plates which you can pick up for about $300 apiece. I would not use an extension box! I know the theory behind them but there would be too much weight hanging out too far for the blackhawk hull. Roadtrip, I have my 150s just laying around if you are interested.
