I'm looking at 2 16's this weekend, one an 89 with a 4.3, the other an 83 with a 350 making about 400hp. Anyone have any pros and cons regarding these boats? I think they both have an Alpha drive. Any information would be very helpful.
thanks

Sounds like that 89 should be an OMC setup. What are the prices on them? Pics?

The 350/400hp is approximately an 83, but the owner doesn't know for sure, so i'm going to search all over to find the correct #'s. It has a pretty strong 350 and he wants 15k canadian. The 89, or at least according to the owners son, who isn't sure, says its a merc setup with the 4.3 six and they want 11.5k canadian. Both include trailer etc. I will also confirm once i get a look at the numbers on this one too. Does anyone think 400hp is too much for an alpha and a 16?

Tru-Jack, do you have any more info on the 400hp 16. It sounds like a boat I looked at last year in Kingston. The owner claimed it would run over 85 mph, but he hadn't broken the engine in yet.

400 hp in a 16 with a 350 and Alpha sounds Knarly!!! Most of the people here tell me that 60-65 MAX true GPS is it for this hull as it gets a mind of it's own after that. I don't think you need 400 HP in a 16' cuz that is what most of us want in an '18...my $.02 http://www.donzi.net/ubb/smile.gif I used to go 54 GPS in an 18 with a Vortec 4.3...NON-DONZI!!!... about 500 lbs heavier.....

The 400hp boat may very well be the one you saw in Kingston last year. The engine was built by the Rini brothers, apparently they know their stuff, in fact i heard that Jim Rini was a former national drag racer. I see the boat this sunday and will report everything i find out. I admit i'm not much of a mechanic, so i'm starting to lean towards the stock 4.3. Any comments about the 4.3 not having enough power?

I have a 16 with a 4.3 4 barrel merc and am very satisfied with the engine/boat set up, will run full tank of gas and boat soda at 57.4 on gps with a 21 pitch prop, I did add trim tabs for cruising speeds but otherwise she is sweet.

Tru-Jack, sorry for the late response, (I've been on vacation since Canada Day) I'm guesing that if you tested that 400 hp 16 this weekend, you were running about 5 miles from my house on the Rideau. That is the 16 I looked at in Kingston 2 years ago, I could have bought it for $11000 then, but passed because I really want an 18. Good luck.
