View Full Version : Oil coolers...pressure or vacuum side of H20

Hi,
I have three oil coolers; engine oil, transmission and power steering. Fortunately, I found a dual unit which I'll run the engine and trans. through, the power steering has it's own. Question, do I run these coolers after the water pump on the pressure side or before the pump on the vacuum side?

This is gonna be a "plumbing nightmare," or at best, a very challenging scenario to make look neat and tidy.

Thanks in advance...

Nate, they must be on the pressure side. Nothing shoulld be on the suction between the pick up and the pump other than a sea-strainer.

HP600SC is technically correct. However, I have seen coolers plumbed on the suction side in inboard engine packages plumbed that way from the factory, on a friend's Rayson craft which appears to be original is on the suction side. I also have done it myself with no ill effects.

Thanks fellas! I'll opt for the pressure side of things.

Plumbing this BS is gonna get very interesting...

Thanks again for your input.

Nathan, You probably already know this but I'll throw it out there anyway, Always have the oil side of the cooler flowing the opposite direction of the H2O side of the cooler.

Nate can I add to you plumbing nightmare, I have been looking oil thermostats over for awhile since they were mentioned in one of the oil posts. Looks like they are well worth looking into.

Nate,
A lot of people & companies run the engine oil cooler on the suction side. I do and it works fine. Easer to plumb too.

I have always used a thermostat in conjuction with my oil cooler. Earl's Products makes a nice unit. It's an adaptor that sandwiches between the block and oil filter which has the ports for the cooler lines and the thermostat built in. One nice neet unit, unless your intent is to remote-mount the filter.
