I'm going to do a helm this winter too. Volvo DPX. IMCO makes a complete setup w/ flexible hoses, but it's kind of pricey...

Anybody know of any used units in your area?

I need to go with power steering on the A drive, I am going to use the stock engine pump. I have the rams with the drive so will be looking for a helm. I have seen some boats are using the flexable from the helm down though they are not power steering which is under higher pressure. Just starting to check on that issue, will be poking around Ebay for a helm.

Ok...With your power steering pump you will need flexable hi pressure I used 2000 psi to be safe.

Heres a website for ya www.parker.com (http://www.parker.com)

Thanks Smoothie for the tip, I sent mail off to them for info. Did you run full length from the helm and are you also power steering?

PS thanks for input from anyone!

Yes full power and full length from the from the PS pump to the filter to the helm to rams to the oil cooler wink :D You should get a catalog from www.imcomarine.com (http://www.imcomarine.com) they give a material list, sizes and the PS pump cap, filter and tank that you are going to need.

I put on a complete Imco twin ram unit on my Criterion. The rams are Stanless and the outside hoses are pre done everything is high pressure steel lined hoes with stanless fittings. The helm and pump fit with no hassels and the instructions were great as were the template you just stick on the hull and drill. yes I spent three times what smoothie did but order once and install and i'm done. Worked all day Saturday and boated Sunday. The kit was complete and didn't have to buy anything except the power-steering oil. With external power steering and well over 650 HP I didn't want to mess around building a component list and mixing a mess of parts. Yes I did read the OSO post on the subject, but I use my boat in all waters and all the SS hardwhear and drop dead gorgous rams and mounts look great and work as good as they look. For me it was money well spent, and I lost only one day of boating during the season. For me it was worth every penny. One more point if there is a problem just call Imco and they have the answer everyone there has done at lease one themselves. Again one stop shopping is all it took.

Phil,
The Arneson typically uses the Char-Lynn hydraulic helm in conjunction with a power steering pump and the Arneson rams. Goodyear is well adept at custom fabricating "flexible" hydraulic hoses to any length you require.

I have the above mentioned helm and would be glad to post pics, but lost the digi cam in the drink...Rik Wimp at Arneson-Industries was extremely knowledgeable regarding the helms. He can be reached at rikwimp@arneson-industries.com.

Mop,heres the web site that Nate mentioned:
http://www.h-ri.com/Product/Steering_systems/Steer_sys_helm_details.html

I used an 211-1010 open helm control and have 2 1/2 turns lock to lock,So you really need to find out the size and stroke of your cylinders so your steering is correct. As you can see there is more to the helm than just the valve, you are going to need a steering post, dash mount and most likely a new wheel.
