And thats exactly why you guys are faster. Cooler
more dense, dryer air, but you knew that... :D
Alot of people do not though. But we do get a couple weeks once a year....usually at that same
time the ice is 10" thick up there.
Ted
P.S. Congrats!!! That is truly mind boggeling,
There is no way that comes easy.....be safe.

Thanks guys..My helper (Daughter is the best)

Ted, Scott knows his sleds...
That's my first fast ride!!! A four foot "Radio Flyer" a 1966.

I've been telling Chris about this great place near my house to test boats. The only problem is you have to run there at high tide. I have not had the chance to run in mirror calm water until yesterday. I thought we were going to run slower!!! She when right up to the rev limiter 6800rpm, it's programed to shut fuel off at 6800 and turn back on at 6500. When she first hit the rev limiter, I had an awful feeling, from that dreaded sputter sound. But Chris put a calming tune to the situation by mentioning it sounded like his boat, when he set the rev limiter to 4500 just to see how it would react.(smart Kid.)
I have a couple great video's from Chris, on board at 45mph in glass water, it looks like we were not moving. And a couple fly bys at over 100. We did several 100+ passes most felt like cruising at 70mph but with more check flaping. Boy is it nice to have calm, no boat wake, no rebound wakes off the shore, water!!!
I'll have to work on a new video this fall/winter. I'll try and post a video, but I'm terrible at it.

Hyper,
The new 106 video footage in calm water looks boring compared to the 100mph video in wavey water.

GEOO, awesome!!! Curious about the rev limiter,
does it shut off fuel or spark. If fuel, is'nt that risky with the procharger. Always wanting
to learn :D .
Thank's,
Ted

Ted,
You're right. It must turn off spark and fuel. I have an on board computer logger. I'll check the engine info tonight. The air temp was 60 degree.

WOW!!!She was running way to rich. At 6800rpm, 6.2 psi, 10.38 A/F, 456.6 lbs/hr. air @ intake 84 degree. I have the O2 sensor set to only take out up to 15% fuel for correction?? I better change that and redo the fuel map a little. I set up the engein to run 12.2 A/F on the dyno, which is rich, to be safe, but 10.38 that's running at least 100hp short!!!HUM...more pitch??

I could use help if anyone know's how to post video's... The bottom right of these links gives you a choice of player and quality. If possible do not pick "low" it plays pourly.

I enjoy sharing the boat and getting your feed back.
Finally, I was able to get some good video's.

It's not too often I get calm enough water, never mind having a video camera with me. (and an expert passenger/camera man)
A little less dramatic then the other video's in open water, but never the less still no room for error. It may not be the safest thing to do, but it feels incredible?? eek!

Rev.limit ques.?
Doesn"t the rev.limiter just shut down ign.to the cyls.in sequence? This allows unburn"t fuel to exit cyls. This would give you rich readings at the 6800 rpm (limiter on) snapshot. Would it show the correct A/F at pre-rev limit 6600-6700 rpm? Just a thought before you lean her down.

GEOO

Thanks for the note,
The ECU controls the rev limiter, Fuel & Spark. I installed an onboard logger which records engine information up to 30 items ten times per second., fuel injector duty cycle, fuel lbs per hour, actual A/F, Target A/F, O2 sensor correction to A/F, water temp, air temp in manifold, manifold pressure vac. & boost etc... I picked 14 to log and graph. It showed the A/F as rpm's increased and while the rev limit is engaging.

Gives me goose bumps. That's a Donzi for you. Looks like I'm going to have some new parts on my Donzi just in time for St. Johns. It seems my belows leaked and now I get to replace a lot of stuff.(Damn salt water) Pulled mounting bolts out of bell housing. Well, I guess thats where the saying comes from.... B.O.A.T (break out another thousand). Oh well, my boat hasen't needed anything for 5 years now ,so I guess she earned it.

Outstanding videos GEOO,I have two little ones at home and kinda wondered how you could pretty much risk your life going that fast and knowing that you pit crew is at home waiting for you,but after seeing your video's I can now understand,it looks like your boat handles like a dream, boy it sure would be great to see you at the ohio shoot out with that DAMN DONZI next year wink

wink O.K. Speed Crew...Question for George and Chris....On the Arneson site I see options for "Gear Reduction" do you want to run with as close as 1:1 as possible or what? What Gear Ratios are you both using or going to be using? Is the ASD 6 the correct drive for a new installation or would you go to one of there other units....what other performance/handling options do you need to install to run a Surface Drive properly....K-Planes,Hydralic Steering,???Also in prop slip calcs...what is a "Real Number" for a surface drive?...Also, what size and pitch props are you guys running? ...Doc

Barry,
She's working on the computer programing!!!

smoothie,
I know what you mean, wife & daughter are very important!!! Every year I seam to get a little uncomfortable and start to think of selling her, but I never seam able too. The speed seams safe, if you can keep a level head. The only time I find myself pushing too hard is while racing someone or a Radar Shoot-Out. (Drinking is not a good thing)In both of these scenario's it's hard to back off. But I hope I've learned it's not worth it!! I never think about getting hurt or the boat, I think of my Wife and daughter with a hurt dad. :(

Dan,

I run a 1.33 drop box Arneson ASD#6, it is rated for 600hp depends on the torque. They also make a modified ASD6-8 which can handle more. I run a 14 x 25 Rolla four blade engine hits rev limiter(working on more pitch) set at 6800 rpm = 15% slip @ 105 mph (my engine makes a lot of hp!!) I don't use the tabs unless there is a side wind or it's choppy and I want to keep the bow down. Arneson comes with External steering, you need to supply the helm, hoses and the power steering pump. My boat is not a typical Arneson application, I create a lot of drag and therefore slippage with a fin on the bottom of the drive. I"m sure if I removed it and moved the CG back I would pick up 10-15 mph but it would not be controllable.

We didn't have too much snow in Birmingham when I was a kid, but plenty of steep hills. Instead of rails, our Radio Flyers had wheels. I was all set to get one for Christmas when my next door neighbor and his sister went under a parked car at the bottom of huge hill eek! . Both had concussions and had to have mucho plastic surgery. I still wanted one but my parents thought that I was nuts :( .

Geoo, Been racing for over 40 years. Here is what I have found 1) the old saying "There are bold racers and old racers, but no old bold racers" is true. 2) First you get smothe then you get fast! 3) know your equipment and its capability 4) know whom your racing and their capaility. 5)Be awhare of everything around you, so if something unforseen happens you can cope with it.
After watching you drive and talking to you, it is evident that you know all of the above. With youI would not hesitate to ride rail to rail in a north eastern. One more point If you look around MOST of the real champions are old not bold racers!!! great run I knew it was just a matter of time. Stay safe!
