I recently purchased a 1986 20' Minx. It has a 260 hp mercruiser with a 21 inch pitch prop. I have only been able to get 52 mph @ 4200 rpms. Any suggestions as to how I could improve the performance of this boat??

Steve-Prop 'er down dude, try a thinned 19 if you can find one.You wanna see 4800-5200 rpm somehow.Go to a seventeen four blade if you have to.Either way-stick with stainless steel and would cup both sizes-light for the 19", and a Super cup for the seventeen. If you have a Prop Shop nearby-see if they have a tryout program, and you will need to assure them you will buy from them.Buy used, reconditioned if they are available, for half price of new.You may just want to depitch your 21-usually a good shop can reduce pitch by 2".They also can reduce the diameter(1" dia=2"pitch)if the prop is original shape.Lotsa options.Have fun.....

Or.......just stick a 502 in it, in front of an Arneson. That combo will get attention.....and you won't be looking up someone elses tailpipe!

Steve, congrats on the new boat. An 86 Minx is a very rare year; most all were 87 or 88 models. As far as performance you need to check all the basics first, most of us Minx guys have around 60 mph on the 260 merc, some even more after modification. My bone stock 350 with the (factory I belive) 21p Mirage turned 5 grand on the VDO tach easy. Tune it up and confirm you`re getting the power before anything. Most of us seem to end up with a 23p prop, on the 1.5 ratio Alpha One. Goodluck with it.

Steve congratulations on your new boat! I have an 86 minx w a tempest 300mr(supposed to be 300hp but it feels more like a 200 and some hp )and I was able to achieve 56mph (on a good day)running at 4800rpm w a 19p mirage prop. You should be running at least 4600rpm w a small block!
