I am running a set of small Bennett's on my Classic 22. They get the job done in most situations. In some conditions I would like more tab. Will a set of Kiekhaefer 280-S's work? I would like to hear from others about what tabs you use?

Sure they would work.
You got a couple grand just laying around doing nothing?

Is $1650 for complete kit a good price?

It's about average.
They ARE the best.
I couldn't justify paying all that money for fancy trim tabs.
But that's me, I am one cheap son of a gun!

The cabbage is a slight sacrifice but worth it if I get what I need. Am I paying for too much tab? I am looking for something that will do the job. Nothing more. Any suggestions. What is everyone else using?

The "small" Bennets work fine on my 21. In fact, I rarely use them. I like'em up all the way so nothing slows me down. About the only time I'll bring them down is in a no wake zone when I'm pushing it and want to keep the bow down.

Joe I,
How small is small? If you are using the 12" or 18" Bennetts they may not be enough. On a 22' they recommend at least a 24" tab to do the trick. If you stick with a larger set of Bennetts you may save your self 1/3 of the price rather than spending it on a Kiekhaefer set. Bennett-Trimtab-Specs (http://www.bennetttrimtabs.com/size.html)

I never actually measured them. I would guess 12 x 9.

I have 12x9s on the 22 and you're right they are too small.

Eventually I plan on installing some dual piston 12x12 Bennett Sport Tabs.(Around $500)

The Bennett 9x12 Sport Tabs work great on my 18.

RickR,
You are right about keeping the width around 12" the same and extending the length of them. A buddy of mine a couple of years ago had a Banana boat (made in RI & only came in 24') with twin 200 Merc outboard screws that were modified, that had 12"w by 24 long tabs which really made a huge difference.

PS. Maybe longer is better!

Dave, CP Performance sells the 280s tabs for $1690 and some change. Also, the 280s tabs have warnings labels on them stating that they are not for use on boats under 21 feet.

Joe, I would use Arneson's Rocker Plates. http://www.arneson-industries.com/
With the rocker plates you can add hook to lower the bow or add rocker to give the boat more bow lift. When you add rocker, you will need less positive trim on the drive thus get a safer ride. GEoo

I am running 280S on my 23' Criterion, Great tabs. My buddy just installed the Arneson rocker plates on his 22' classic. Even better than the K planes. The Dura Planes are easier to install and everything mounts inside the transom, maybe you should take a peak at them www.duraplanemarine.com (http://www.duraplanemarine.com)
