Here's a gearhead question. Still going thru shake down runs with the Jr. Well, we found a crack in the Port Exhaust Manifold which was spaying water and shorting out the plugs. While trying to get the manifold off, found a SS plate between the manifold and the riser that blocked off all the coolent galleys except one which had a 1/4 inch hole drilled in it. The engine builder says this was needed or else the engine would never get to op temp. I gotta wonder, if this is right. Is there ever a need to restrict coolent flow this way?

Owen,
The reason is legitimate. They do restrict the flow with the gasket and a SS plate on Crusaders and they restrict the flow with the gasket on Merc center-risers. The water circulating through the block needs a place to escape into the exhaust so new water can enter the block. Also, typically the risers are fed by a stream that bypasses the block so that when the thermostat is closed there is still sufficient water to cool the exhaust.
