Hi everybody!

I'm new to posting here but have been lurking for quite sometime. Hopefully I will be the proud owner of a Classic soon. These are truly great machines with character and muscle exuding from all corners. All of you owners are lucky people!

Anyways, as I was purusing the registry I came across the above mentioned boat, truly gorgeous! How many of these boats were made? Was this an option? Is the owner around, I would love to hear more about this boat. Thanks everyone, I look forward to sticking around!

The owner has been around from time to time. As far as I know this still is the only one ever built/sold. It is an awesome combination.

I'm very pleased to say I am the owner of the only 18ft.scorpion classic ever built. It is a 2002 model which I took delivery of 7-23-01.I currently have 39hrs on her and best speed to date with 25 lab finished mirage is 83mph.She gets to be a handfull after 76 "chine-walking".The boat came fully loaded except for the cmi header which was not offered at the time of build.I was dreaming of a DONZI for 35yrs,and dreams do come true.Since purchasing it I have installed a prelube system and drive shower, and hope to add stainless manifolds and risers over the winter.Keep dreaming,

Kraven, I saw a brand new 18 with a Scorpion
being tested by the factory test drivers last week
in Sarasota. It was red/white. What an awesome ride!! Wonder who the lukcy owner of the second one ever made is? What are you using to read 83 MPH? Speedo, GPS or Radar?

Kraven,
Just as I eventually had my "Worlds-most-expensive-Classic 18" title bubble burst, I have seen another Classic 18 Scorpion in addition to yours. 2002 model. But yours was the first hull done that way to my knowlege.
We still need to get together at a future event and run together.

377 Scorpion rev. limiter is 5300 RPM.
5300 RPM divided by 1.50 (gear ratio)=
3533.33333 propellor Revoloutions per minute. X
25 inches (prop pitch) = 88333.332 inches per minute. Divided by 12 = 7361.111 feet per minute.
X 60 = 441666.66 = feet per hour. Dived by 5280
(feet in a mile) = 83.648988 MILES PER HOUR.

= ZERO % slip. Is that possible???

Maybe the GPS is set up in Kilometers per hour!! :p
Yes I'm kidding!

Ted, I was thinking the same thing! I never want to burst anyone's bubble but 83 mph with a 25" pitch?

5200 rpm x 25" pitch = 130,000

1.5 ratio x 1056 = 1584

130,000/1584 = 82.07 mph with zero slip

Hey Ted, I'm not sure's who's method is more accurate(probably yours) but mine is a hell of a lot easier. I don't think I am smart enough to do it your way. :D

Does labbing the prop effectively increase the pitch.
Would you still use 25" if it was a labbed prop, or a greater number......

Have you run your numbers using a 1.32:1 Drive? It's 13% taller. That might explain the speed...and account for the slip.

A 1.36 drive with about 10% slip would put him right there. But I doubt that boat has a 1.36. Like I said, I am not trying to burst anyone's bubble. It is one sweet ass boat and I am sure it's very fast.

I doubt the 377 Scorpion (350PSHP) could push a 25P Mirage with a 1.32:1 ratio drive. My 350MAG (300HP) pushes a 25P Mirage + with 1.65:1 ratio drive at 66-68mph. It would take much more than 50HP to get an add'l 15mph. My guess is that the boat would run around 72-75mph, but I've seen stranger things. Hell of a boat anyway you slice it though.

I am sure it is a 1:50 ratio. All of the 18 Scorpion's tested run 72-74 MPH by the factory.

boxy, some people claim polishing a propeller blade softens the edges of it and lets it flex more that is why a lab finish is left on sometimes.

i hope to be owner #2 towards august of next summer.

What's the cost for that honey, Ranman?

Thanks Ted, That's along the lines of what I was thinking.

Don't know what an 18 Scorpion runs. 40K...50K???

When props are labbed, they generally get trued, balanced and the blades get thinned. A thinner blade slices through the water easier and is more efficient. Combine this with balancing and trueing and voila...and extra 1-2 mph. I've heard that water likes to stick to a polished surface more so than a "grainy" surface and so the shops leave the prop "grainy" after labbine them.

GPS's can also lie. I noticed this while out with Scott Bolts last Saturday. He was playing with props and mentioned his GPS so I turned mine on and reset the max speed function. I just happend to look at it later in the day and had to chuckle. Figured I'd use it in a funny post about GEOO somewhere. Anybody know why this happens or what causes it?

It realy doesn't matter the exact speed. It's one fast 18.... I remember when mine went 58mph and that was fast!!!!
That's the fastest stock 18!!!!
I was killing some time tonight, (wife's at the Cape) and picked up a copy of Robb Report at the bookstore to thumb through. Page 12, August copy a fellow wrote an article to the edditor on how he agree's with him how nice old wood boats are But!!! He rode in a freind 1972 2 + 2 (?) 18 Donzi with a warmed up 350ci 400hp and dry exhaust at 70 mph and it was a adrenaline rush!!!

i called a dealer in cincinnati and he said they normally run around 35k with the scorpion package and for the 16, around 23k depending on options. this surprised me i thought you could only get the 18 with the scorpion package but i guess not.

KRAVEN

To my knowledge the scorpion package is only available in the 18ft and up.The 377 scorpion motor and bravo1xz drive is a $23,000 option.

My understanding is that the 260hp 5.7 is the largest power package available in the 16. i could very well be wrong though.

what you are saying seems fast enough on a 16, i am just saying what the guy told me. i have not been able to find a scorpion 16 anywhere else.

geoo i love looking through that mag, bugatis, ferraris, 139k watches....
