How deep are the scratches? You just don't want to make it worse. You may need two or three different grades of abrasive compounds and(or) polishes. 3M makes good stuff.

Also, sometimes it's best to leave it alone, take a deep breath, and try to forget about it. You'll live longer! Just remember, if you use your boat, the first scratch comes along sooner or later.

Here is the standard scratch reduction/removal method. Just remember, when you perform the following steps, you make the gelcoat thinner in those spots that you work. Gelcoat is usually fairly thick, but always proceeded with caution.

Depending on the depth of the scratches, you can start with 400 or 600 grit wetordry sandpaper mounted to a firm rubber sanding block. Wet sand slowly and lightly, stopping when you just begin to not see the scratches any more. Then progress to 1000, 1500, and maybe even 2000 wetordry color paper on the same rubber sanding block to remove the fine scratches left by the previous grits. Always use a hose trickeling water on your work while you sand. This will flow off any debrees that could cause additional scratching while sanding. Now progress to one of the 3M or Meguires products made for power buffing gelcoat with a foam pad. I have the best luck with foam pads, so get a power buffer (not a grinder) and a foam pad from an auto supply that specializes in automotive refinishing and have at it. You really don't need much much product on the pad or use very much pressure. Let the machine do the work.

Good luck!
