I am looking at purchasing a 28ZX (hopefully with the Scorpion package) once I sell my 22ZX. Since the Donzi performance section on their website isn't up and running yet, I figured I'd ask here.

What it the top end speed of a new 2001+ 28ZX with the twin 350 Mags and also the top end of the 28 Scorpion (not the ZXO) with twin 377's. I'm looking for honest W.O.T. speed (GPS). I don't want to buy a bigger boat that will be slower than my current 22ZX. Thanks.

Someone else will give more accurate numbers, but here's my estimate.

350MAGs - 75-77mph
377 Scorps - 80-82mph

Rick,

Randy's guess is pretty accurate according to my experience.

I spent some time on a ZXO Scorpion at AOTH2 and he said it was a 78-79 mph boat. With the solid deck, you should see a couple of more mph.

Don't waste your time on the 350s if you can afford the good stuff. There are deals out there on these boats.

Also remember that 28 is going to feel a lot better under you than a 22 even if it is a few miles an hour slower.

Good luck,

Todd

Thanks guys. That is kinda what I thought. Paul - I came across that article too. I was figuring low 70's with the twin 350's and @ 80 - 83 with the twin 377's. I wonder if anyone on here actually owns a 28 scorpion??? Now I just gotta get rid of my 22!

I probably will be keeping the boat pretty much stock, maybe just put some straight thru tips on without baffles and maybe a K&N air filter if they make it for the 377's. Does anyone have any experience with these Merc. 377's???

The nice thing about the Scorpion package is you also get CMI exhaust, labbed props, external hydraulic steering and zero-effort controls.

Ric..

There is guy up here on Winni with that setup. I believe he ran 78-79 GPS with the Scorpion motors. They only add 100hp over the stock 350MAG setup pushing a 6500lb (dry) more like 7500lb wet boat. Still, a very sweet ride....

My 2 Cents since I have already done all the homework and rode in both:
As ROADTRIP mentioned Skip was fast at AOTH II in the 28ZXO Scorp, 79ish GPS, same boat (1999 a bit lighter) in our club 75/76 ish with T350's at 5000rpm.
BUT two different boats, the newer ones are heavier and built better.
For the money 350's, for value/personal fun if you plan to keep the boat, Scorps.

What I went through on the 28ZX order we could not consumate, ($$$) was 6.2's with closed loop, dealer will quote a cost for 6.2's, but then the phone will ring that 6.2 HORIZON's with closed loop is another $2500 bucks....
Shop wise and shop around.................
When a dealer quotes a price it is the basics, when you add "odd" things" like no mufflers, or closed cooling, or 2 subwoofers, dealers cannot speak in the terms they will get back from the factory. So don't get to set on the initial price.
Another friend just quit a deal, signed by the saleman and the owner said no! A week later!
A 28ZX with either twins will be night and day to a 22ZX, both are great boats!
Have fun, be safe and DEFINATELY keep us all posted.

We had a Scorpion running 78GPS. The 28ZX 350s runs 71-72 gps.

I have a 2000 28ZX with twin 350s the boat runs a honest 72 mph all day long, its a great boat. I am looking at a 2002 33ZX so my 28 might be up for sale. The scorpion boat is sweet, by in my opinion the 350 motors in the 28 is a perfect match for this boat. The extra cash for the scorpions in my opinion is not needed. then again what do I know. Good luck anyway.
