Check this out. I snapped a few shots of this pulling out of Metro Beach last Saturday. Anyone know what it is exactly?

I'll tell you what, that bad boy sounded like it was ready to run! Not sure I care for the over the transom exhaust, but hey...whatever blows your hair back!

Guess this guy really didn't want to cut holes in his transom.......

Yes, as previously answered it's the sport. The same hull was also offered in a flat deck but had very limited engine compartment height. I don't know if both versions were offered simulaniously. They are very good hulls for rough water.

They would really hate taking a wave over the transom of that boat! :o

Now that I look at the pics a bit closer, it looks like a seriously raised x dimension. The carbs and exhaust are quite high. Look how high the drives are mounted on the transom. Is this normal or has the "X" been raised???

Me thinking that magnum's got twin big blocks...

Drives look to be mounted close to normal.
These are mine:

Absolutely needs a hatch!

I take water over the transom while I am floating. Conditions don't need to be all that rough.

I have a friend with that same model... 27 Sport Magnum. He has TRS drives at a normal drive height, small blocks with small blowers: and that is enough to require cutting holes in the engine cover to let the flames arrestors protrude.

im thinking they are ford small blocks under the hood, maybe he found out how much water cooled headers cost for them and went the dry route.(I tried to look for the distributors in the front)

Those are water injected headers. you can see the spray/fog in the pictures.

I've seen headers like this that poked through the squared off section of the back of the hatch on a Cigarette 28ss. In the case of this boat, the headers were Bassett and they had an internal leak -- ruining an engine... Small Block Chevy.

I also watched at a dock as another 28ss with his hatch off swamped while coming in to the docks. He came in fast. Cut the throttles and then popped it into reverse -- ala JFK. Killed both engines and sank almost immediately. He had twin Big Blocks w/ TRS Drive -- lots of weight. Way, way low on the transom...

You guys have some good eyes.

Chris, if the center line of those engines are less than 36" apart, then it not big blocks. 30" to 30-1/2" is about right for small block Chevrolets in that boat. Big blocks would stick up pretty high in a 27 Magnum Sport. Also, a lot of Magnum 27 race boats use over transom exhaust the protrude through a raised engine hatch. I came very close to buying a set of over transom Patterson race headers with "Y" pipes from Tres Martin a couple of years back, and at a give away price, but at the time I wasn't up for doing the raised hatch thing. My guess is that this guy has a raise engine hatch somewhere back on shore, because when the 27 Sport isn't moving, and there are some waves, water can come over the rear. If not he needs to hook up with Eugene ASAP! Also, if you notice, the back seat has been removed as well.

Ranman, when TRS drive are mounted in the Magnum 27 with a slightly raise X, the top of the transom assembly mounts just about to the bottom of the rub rail. The farther apart the engine are mounted in tha 24-degree hull, the higher the drives needs to be mounted. That's the main reason that it's tough, but not impossible, to mount a pair of big block in a 27 Sport.

Broque, small-block Fords? I doubt it with the TRS drives, but a few earlier Magnum 27s with Volvo drives had 351 engines. Hay, can't you see that the distributors are at the rear? Try playing with the brightness control on your monitor! wink

That's a nice looking Magnum 27 Sport!
