You have two 502's that need to be freshened up

BUT

You have access to (2) 525sc's that are running that have 200 hours on them. You can get the 525sc's for a tad more than the cost of rebuilding the 502's.

Which would you go for? 525sc's are 454 engines with blowers.

Just an opinion! To me 200 hours on blower motors is high hours, fresh 502's may be a slower but also a lot more trouble free. My 2 cents!

if ya really want blue that badly i do have the paint code wink

freshen the 502's and do them the way YOU want them... they will be reliable if you do not get carried away and use quality components and ptu them together correctly with some good care... and you will KNOW what is in them. i reckon you could get fairly close to the 500 hp number if you put a good holsom package together...

just cause the 525's run... well who knows what they have been through or how they've been maintained :(

steal the headers if ya can though wink unless they are cracked of course

I'd go through the 502's and do them with quality stuff. It shouldn't take a lot to get 500 horses out of it N/A.

When ALL is said and done...what was the ORIGINAL final goal set forth with the restification? That may help with my thoughts..

Scot
The 502's will be runnin long after the 525's blow through the bottom end. If you don't believe me , follow me up to the Performance Marine grave yard. I can just hear you saying to Kim "Honey, did you here that pop under the hatch as we slowed down? Let me explain to you how much that will cost to fix,Dear! eek! eek! eek!

Scot you have without doubt amassed a lot of good buddies that can find most anything you want for the 502's. And like Ed says reliable is just that reliable, and I bet you can pump out 500HP and be real happy.

If you freshen the one's you have, you can use most of the expensive parts over again, crank, rods, pistons (if it doesn't need bored), heads etc. I would think the cost would be more attractive, not to mention the peace of mind that they are fresh.

Turn the crank, new bearings, new rings, new cam, new lifters, valve job, check the springs (they are most likely fine), rebuild the carbs, install new exhaust and you should be good to go. May as well put a starter in while they are out, unless they are top mounted (like mine :) )

Scot, First you should send Mark his video from Possum Kingdom. Then you should build your 502's to be reliable. It is a pain to maintain blower engines.

Go Supercharged! I have over 1000 hours on my Turbo 454.

Isn't it all about hours? If you are only going to put 30 or 40 hrs a year on them, go SC. But if you can afford the gas to really use the boat,NA is the way to go. Or, drop the boost and go for the COOL factor..Ed

Scott,

Heres a easy and practical clich'e way to consider which route to take. If you want to get from point "A" to point "B" first, go with the 525sc. But if you want to get to those two points "every time" you go out then take it down a notch.
"The faster you go, the faster you blow!"
How big is your wallet, let that be your guide.

On second thought have fun go for the gusto wait for a pair of 575's. only kidding.

Reme3mber stock 525SC are a mild form and not much load put on the engine. They get desent economy if you stay off full tilt. the big factor is mid range torque. Example: Bad-Tat amd I travled the same distance at Eufala and used excatly the same fuel. I don't agree that they are weak as durability goes. Most depend on the driver. The other factor is anything can happen as you found out on your 350. The Sc already has more time than your 350 had. Flip a coin, at least it will be your desision. The other thing is the SC is a factory motor not a refurbished engine. Yea we can build one better than the factory but not everybody can or will.

I've been thinking about this for a couple of days now. If these are for that Scarab I would go for the supercharged motors. My Scarab is an '86 and is a very heavy hull and could use some extra ponies. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzplus every time I punched it and there was no more left I would always wonder "What would have been." That alone would drive me nuts. I am sure you will make the right choice for your application. Good Luck Greg

stay with the 502's. This might sound stupid, but remember that your odds of a problem with a motor doubles when you have two of them . SC motors require more tlc and $, yes I hear all the people who say they have no problems, but once again you will have two of them.

Unless you have very deep pockets, or you are an extremely knowledgable guy who has the logistics in place to take care of them yourself, stay with the 502's.

It's not just about speed...

I would go with the SC Motor but I
don't have a lick of sence.
You just have to take the hit if
the time comes! and I am sure it will
come.
