You know the other thing people should be listing is the drive angle or %up.

Here are some more specs from a good source.

18 Classic
Year:?
Engine: 5.7 GSi 290 H.P. Volvo
Drive: SX
Gear: 1.43
Prop: 22P 14 3/4" Dia.
67.3 MPH @ 4855 RPM, Drive 90% up.

18 Classic
Year:?
Engine: 5.0 220 H.P.
Drive: Alpha-1 GenII
Gear: 1.47
Prop: 19P 14 Dia., Vengeance
53.5 MPH @ 4600 RPM, Drive 60% up.

18 Classic
Year:?
Engine: 5.7 MAG MPI 300 H.P.
Drive: Bravo-1
Gear: 1.65
Prop: 25P 14 1/2" Dia., Mirage+
68.4 MPH @ 5040 RPM, Drive 90% up.

Hey Varyak, you already have 4 MPH over the 350 MAG, sounds like your right where you should be. I bet you've got a few more MPH in her though. When do we get to see pictures of your new boat?

Now, either my 2 handy boat speed calculaters (which both come up with the same numbers) are wrong or, the slip factor I am using is way off (10% which I thought was probably better than real life) or, there are other factors I am not considering, but, for some reason, many of these speeds don't add up. I am absolutely not accusing anyone of exaggeration. Just wondering why many of these numbers don't work. It was posted here at one point that slip was about 12% for an 18'. I have no way of knowing if this is accurate. Actually, I wanted to back into the slip factor by using these numbers.

Here is the setup on my 1972 16 Ski Sporter:

65.2 MPH on Trimble GPS @ 4700 RPM with 2 people on board 24 gal fuel + beer, ice, etc.

(cut and pasted from previous post)
* 1991 Ford 302 flat-tappet block and cast crank
* Open chamber 69cc heads (intake gasket matched)
* KB116 hyperutectic dome pistons (9.4:1 CR)
* factory 5.09" rods with ARP bolts
* Crane Powermax H-272-2 cam kit
* Edelbrock Performer 289 intake with ARP bolts
* Holley Marine 450 CFM vacuume secondary carb
* closed cooling systen with 160-degree thermostat
* Kodiak center-rise aluminum exhaust and risers
* Mercruiser 215 HP cast-aluminum seven-quart oil pan
* Alpha One SS drive (1.5:1)
* 14 x 23 three-blade Merc outboard motor cleaver prop

Note: The old 16 Donzi Ski-Sport hull differs from the new "Sweet 16" Classic. The inside lifting strakes on the 16 Ski Sporter ends about 16" from the transom, which causes this boat to run very high on the water. On the other hand, the inside lifting strakes on the later model Sweet 16 end about 4-feet from the transom, which make this boat run with more hull in the water producing a more stable and predictable ride than is to be had on the early model 16 Donzi. For this reason, the same setup in the later model 16 Donzi will most likely produce different results than listed above.

My previous posts included numbers from a very good source, these numbers are from a computer model and based on actual test results. Most boat speed calculators do not consider drive angle as this one does.

Volvo GSi:
67.3 MPH, 4855 RPM, Drive 90% up, 9.0% Slip.
@ 4500 RPM & 70% up, 10.5% Slip.
@ 3500 RPM & 20% up, 12.8% Slip.

5.0L:
53.5 MPH, 4600 RPM, Drive 60% up, 9.7% Slip.
@ 4500 RPM & 50% up, 10.3% Slip.
@ 3500 RPM & 30% up, 11.0% Slip.

350 Mag:
68.4 MPH, 5040 Rpm, Drive 90% up, 9.0% Slip.
@ 4500 RPM & 70% up, 10.5% Slip.
@ 3500 RPM & 20% up, 12.8% Slip.

My Application: Based on Speedo numbers

19P Revolution-4:
3000 RPM, 33 MPH, Drive 100% down, 16.7% Slip
3500, 41.6, 25% up, 10.0% Slip
4000, 47.8, 50% up, 9.6% Slip
4500, 54.2, 70% up, 8.7% Slip
4600, 56, 80% up, 7.8% Slip

21P Revolution-4:
3000 RPM, 38 MPH, Drive 100% down, 12.5% Slip
3500, 45, 25% up, 11.3% Slip
4000, 51.8, 50% up, 10.7% Slip
4200, 56, 80% up, 8.0% Slip

The Revolution-4 has a lot of bite and does not slip much. I believe why this holds in turns and accelerates so well.

BB, It an old hand-held Ensign XL, but it works great, especially now that SA is gone. It has a 1993 copyright when you first turn it on, and cost over a thousand whne it was new. I bought it used a couple of years back for $85 to verify my Furuno GP30 in my Magnum and to use on the Donzis. These days, any new $120 GPS will do the same and more, and will be easier to use. Trimble no longer makes consumer grade GPS systems, just the high end stuff for marine, aviation, survey, agraculture, construction, etc., as well as GPS engines for other GPS manufacturers.

Owen, that's a neat site!

1972 Ski Sporter with a 302, build late 80's with a Edelbrock Dual-plane manifold, Holley 650 Dbl-pumper, original H/M stuff, 4 large people (other two weighed 425 between them), 23 gal gas, crappy aluminum 14-3/8x21 prop with prop burn almost thru the blades turned 50 on GPS, my guess with just my wife an I, the good Michigan/Spinelli Bros 14-1/2 X21 would be an honest 55. Am I about right?

Kevan- Try a 450 CFM carburator on your 302. The trick to making a 302 run is intake velocity. You can get more volume out of a bigger carburator but it also slows the flow up, the 450 is all it needs. I saw 5,000 rpm on Forrest's tach (he could only read the GPS below 4700 or so and he still got 65.2 mph@4700) right before the interior blew out and he has a 450.

I've recently replaced all gauges w/Faria's and am running a water pressure spedo. Running in cool weather I can bury the 80 mph spedo @ 5700-5800 rpm, so I'm assuming 80+.
