Hi,I'm looking at a 1968 18 2+3 it has a Holman Moody 289 missing the intake and valve covers, it has the exhaust manifolds and bell housing ,I have 2 questions: 1 what is the difference between the 230hp and the 260hp motor this one has the wide damper, any numbers to look for on the motor? 2 Did Holman Moody do any thing internally to these motors ? Or was it bolt on. Thanks Jerry W. Bugay

Hey Jerry
The fastest thing to look for would be guide plates for the push rods, the 289K heads had cast in slots for guide plates. The balancer part# C5OZ-6316-A was a 2 piece which measured 6 1/2" O.D. and 3 37/64 long. some of the Hp 289 parts are id with orange paint.
I don't think they made the HP 289 in 68, but you might have a67 engine. Wait a minute they did produce a service block in 68 cast #C8AM-B.
Look for a Z in the part or casting #'s these are generally HP parts.
Hope its a 289HP,Got my fingers crossed

All 289's had the slots to act as guide plates until they started to use the rocker arms with the side tabs. The wide damper is a sign of the "K" engine.

Just went down stairs and found the original heads and push rods, balancer and crank from our first engine a H&M on our 1966. All thoes balancers are two piece ( thats why they are called harmonic balancers). Any way the horse power was 235 on that engine. In cars the 289HP was 271 horse, on the shelby it was 306hp. During that time boats didn't see 260hp untill 351 cubic inches came in them.
