What is the x-factor? When talikng about a boat???thanks

I'm not the expert, but let me take a stab at it

it is the height that the propeller center is in relation to the transom and bottom of the boat
raised a little can boost speed, some props work better with air around them so the closer they get to the surface the faster they are

now I'll let the experts explain it better

... it is the height/ actually depth, of the caviation plate in reference to the hulls bottom. It is an extension of the width of the CAV plate as projected against the transom. This locates the rest of the drive obviously. It is a point on the transom, for which will be the reference for anything else you might want to change/modify. Search "X dimension" and you will find a "TON" of stuff on this.
