Hi We pulled the engine out of the boat. The 302 has a strange front motor mount. Is this original or home made. We have a complete 87 merc 260 out of another boat that is in nice shape. Would it be better to leave the 302 with a 250 volvo outdrive or put the 260 in it. Any ideas on this. Tomorrow were going to try and pop the deck and see how the hull is. I think were going to have a lot of questions and i hope we can get some input on this. How can we resize the pictures to fit on the page better we have been trying all night. Thanks Arie and Chris

ArieS,
good luck with the project, you'll find whatevr info you need here.
I have a ford H/M and the bracket on mine is similar, yours looks like it has been field modified a little for the additional water pump mine only has the crank driven jabsco.
the choice of engines is yours both have their merits and bad points.
keep in mind originality, availabilty of parts, props and trim.

volvo = strong, original less prop choice some H/M might be hard to find but parts are still available ,no trim on some models

merc= not original, parts props everywhere, might not be as strong, and trim

now having opened this can of worms merc vs volvo I will retire to the home theater with the orville redenbacher, clicker ,beer and have the Yankees on and the pc on this thread. wink :p :D

If you think it would help you can see my setup I'm not to far from you, I'm just across the border from West Milford NJ about 45 minutes from you
good Luck

Was the additional water pump installed to run a fresh water cooling system? If so I would be interested in seeing pics of the rest of the set-up. With the exception of the additional pump this looks like the HM 302 that I will be installing on my '67 16 and I haven't yet decided whether to go to the additional expense of installing FWC.

forgot to mention the merc's are faster

some setups had two pumps on a raw water system
raw water and circulating
the h/m I've seen have one crank driven pump and a crossover pipe

So this is the original motor mount for this boat? How did the water circulation pump seal it self on the bottom. I seams to have a gap that had some blue sealer squirted in. Does any one have a picture of how it is supposed to look. also it did not have Fresh water cooling But had this rear water pickup. Sorry about the size of the photo i have not been able to figure out how to resize them Arie

Arie,

Get your self some imaging software if you don't have some already. You need to use a program like Paint Shop Pro or PhotoShop to resize your photos prior to posting. Open the photo using the program. Resize it to 640 x 480 using the software and then save it with a new filename. Upload the newly saved (and resized) photo when you post. Thanks.

Thanks Ranman for your help. My son and I removed the deck this evening, it was not to hard just tricky. this donzi has a long piece of fiber glass floor running almost to the front of the boat. I have no clue. It almost looks it was fiberglassed on as a after thought. I will try to post some pictures later. Also after applying some paint remover to it, it might be the same maroon boat Mattyboy looked at.

To put in the Merc you would have to fill in the transom hole and do a lot of glass work. Our 16 and 18 boath still have the Volvos in them. I beleive the 260 merc was pre alpha. Me I would stay with the Volvo and 302

That is correct, the 260 is pre Alpha. You can put a lower Alpha on an upper 260 and in affect, you will have an Alpha. The uppers are the same for the two units.

Is that what this is a ski rack. We removed the deck and the hull is in much better shape than we hah hoped. The transome and the stringers look and feel solid but the deck is in sad shape the wooden core is comepletely rotten, and the seats sagged and pulled the rear and side deck down spliting the fiberglass. Should we remove the gas tank or just pressure test it. It seems to be mounted pretty solid between the stringers. Thanks for the help
