I have a brand new 18 Classic with a 350 mag. In one of my last IO boats the engine water temp was allways around 170 degrees. The new Classic seems to run at 190 degrees. Is this high or is it to be expected when running Florida's waters. BTW the oil temp is 140 degrees.

Jagged,

Check out the operating specs in your Mercury manual. If you don't have one, call R.V. World in Nokomis. They are a local Donzi dealer. If you are interested with getting together with other Donzi owners in Sarasota, give me a call. (941) 780-2886

Hi Jagged: that seems high to me, my 350 Classic 18 never saw 190 degrees. It uasully ran in the 160 to 170 range. Lake water up here in the East can get into the 80 degree range. Have the gauge and sender checked, I had a ride in a 03 demo 18 where the Gaffrig Monsters hardly showed anything in terms of water temp or oil pressure. I asked the guy doing the demo who happened to be the dealer's service manager and he felt that the Monsters where to much gauge for a small block. I don't buy that, but maybe he has a point in terms of the senders and there compadibility with gauges. Good luck with 18.

Is it fresh water or raw water cooled? Gauge could be off, check contacts, also if you have a friend with a temp gun check it with that. 190 is high for raw cooling but not bad for closed cooling.

Guage could definitely be off. When I switched replaced my VDO guages with Faria my water temp read higher. With the VDO it was always 150-160* and with the new Faria it is 170-180*.

Just a thought.

JE [/QB]Isn't 140 for oil temp way outta range - low?

Red Dog you have "Sniffed" up a signifigant point, oil temp is way the heck COOL! A wee bit over 200 would sound better. Still don't know if it raw or closed cooling.

Me thinks the wires for the water temp and oil temp sensors are hooked to the wrong gauges.

J

just my opinion, and i'm stickin' to it..

Jim, Good call. I think that is a possibility.

I asked the guy doing the demo who happened to be the dealer's service manager and he felt that the Monsters where to much gauge for a small block. Now that is Funny. And I can't watch a TV bigger then 27" because I only weigh 160lbs.

just my opinion, and i'm stickin' to it.. I think you got it! I thought maybe they did that but then said to myself the factory couldn't done that? With the oil temp at about 150 and the water at 190 it could very well be.
Anybody know the wire colors are to each gauge? I have a '03 Classic '18
Thanks
JE

PS: I'll be out on the boat this weekend in the Sarasota, Bradenton area, anybody going to be out there?

JE, disconnect the wires at the two gauges, leave the wires loomed as they are, and just switch the gauges in their respective holes. They prolly just put the gauges in the wrong position. 10 minute job.

J

ya's gotta wonder if the factory did any more like this

I would check the wire colors at the senders and at the back of the gauges just to make sure as well..Water temp should be Tan, I don't know what the color of oil temp should be. Good luck.
