Is there any way you can check for water in the oil if fluids have been recently changed? Also, was a 330 trs always considered a 454? Thanks for any info, this is a great sight.

Yes, the 330 TRS was always a 2 bolt main 454. As for water in the oil...if you don't see foam or milkyness on the dipstick, oil filler cap, or up in the rocker-arm area of the heads, then, there is little or no water in the oil.

Oil and water mixed together may generate streaks of a tan creamy substance in the oil.

Many times on raw water cooled engines you will see muck up in the valve covers, they do not run hot enough to cook the condensation out. You will see any possible oil discoloration after a few runs either on the dip stick or if you pull the bottom plug on the drive. Don't worry about a little muck up on the dip stick just the oil in the pan.

Great info. Poodle, I was asking about drive and engine, do I need to check tranny also? Yea.there is seals between the outdrive and the tranny on the output shaft,if your rubber boot goes bad you may get water thru to your trans,If I were you I would go ahead and change the oil if it hasnt been done in a while.

The 330 refers to the horspower not the drive. They were all 454BBNC. My origional Criterion engine is a 330 and is a 1981 and has a 4 bolt main, and a flat tappet cam. The 330 also was couppled to Borg Warner velvit drive C 17 trans as well as the merc trans, which is in my Criterion. After the 330 came the 420 which was also a 454.
