View Full Version : who made the donzi?

In looking at a 1993 18' classic on the weekend, I noticed that the hull decal/d.o.t plate said "built by Chris-Craft for Donzi"
Is this normal or does Donzi contract out hull lay-up etc. Would this explain the 351 windsor and a King Cobra leg with no through hull exhaust? As well, the Teal stripe on deck was very badly oxidized, as well as the white on hull top sides. The boat had "10 hours" on it but NO, there is no hour meter on it anywhere, within engine compartment or dash. Did does DONZI use the lastest AME resins etc with UV retardants and all the rest of the high tech goodies as say the makers of Cobalt and others do? I was welcome to take a can of paste wax to the boat, which we did and when all was said and done, on the deck, it still looked milky. Is this normal is is there a relation to the hull maker/ (Chris Craft) and there shop products?

Yup! Answers most of it.Chris Craft bought and owned Donzi for a bit.If my history lessons serve me right-they made the buy primarily to get a handle on Donzi's gelcoat techniques."Primarily" is the operative word here-but I'm sure some will embellish this thread. The other stuff was Chris Craft.Quality and Fast were not part of the vocabulaty.I have receipts from 1991-92 restoration of my X18-showing OMC logo dated 9/11/91-and Chris Craft logo on 2/03/92.I think everybody owned em at one time or another.Address for both OMC and ChrisCraft was the same (in Charlotte,NC)-don't recall which owned which.

P.S. Nothing wrong with the Windsor and the King Cobra drive-but a Donzi without thru hull exhaust will certainly mentally prevent one from Running With The Big Dogs. It's like a Big Dog that just got "fixed".....

I believe that OMC owned Chris-Craft and Donzi. Lots of interchange there. They also made those boats that looked like a 21 or so Chris-Craft and had the Donzi name on the side.

It was a sad time in Donzi history.

When OMC bought Donzi they used the new (Donzi) Sarasora Plant to build Chris Craft and moved Donzi to Goshen Indiana.
OMC used the same layup, very minimal chop and balsa coring in the deck.
Seems like most boats of that time had problems with colors fading. I cleared my black and it looks great.
Although the new Donzis are 1st Class, my OMC 90 Classic has better fit, finish and rigging than my American Holdings 95 Classic.

Reading a boating magazine this weekend reminded me of a question I have been meaning to ask:

What is the story with the big 60 plus foot sportfisherman with the Donzi name on them? When in the complicated Donzi history did this happen?

Donzigo,
Do you mean to say that they are still making the big sportfisherman? If so, I wonder what lind of licensing agreement is in effect.

No offence but Donzigo but most of what you have stated should begin with "Once upon a time..."

I think that Scott B with the tin cup chalice has the answer to the Donzi sportfishing boats. Where is he when you need him..?

If you check back in the archives you will find some long threads that correctly chronicle the ownership of Donzi from 1963/4 to date.

Check it out.

Donzigo,
Kenn is really a nice guy. He is just a little abrupt.

Kenn You are also a Donzi historian. Why don't you give us your take on it. Surely you can sit still long enough to pen it.
(not the lead filled one!).
Give my regards to the wifey!

Thanks for the replies. I wasn't impressed by the fit and finish on the 18' I looked at.
The top side of the outside perimeter of the sheer, deck perimeter, was bumpy within the cove relief. Not something I would have expected from a Company capable of building Masterpieces. I like Rick R's pictures of his '90 a lot better than what I came in contact with. I am not judging anyone and or boat here, but when I buy something built by a "Factory" it had better be right...This Company could/can build anything they want. I didn't like what I saw and in knowing, (through the Internet) and Boats on-line what the "rest" sell for with all the "Goodies", SBC, Thru hull, Nice Gel coat, windshield, etc,low hours I don't think this would be a good decision on my part. It would pay for me to "go" somewhere, make a "voyage" out of it and bring home to the North, a yummy example. Not just the only one that rears it head. Rick R... I am still looking at yours...454 Man, is that big...

Roscioli makes the Donzi yachts. They are custom built machines that run in the $millions$ and the Twin 1,450 HP 16V92TA Detroit Diesels give me a big woodie http://www.donzi.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

I swiped this photo from Waynec (http://www.waynec.com) and their webmeister evidently got his panties in a wad because we were "taxing" his server and I did not post a credit for the picture. Please buy all of your Roscioli Donzi's from Waynec (http://www.waynec.com) as they are having a hard time handling the stress that this link puts on their website. If you want to flame their webmeister, here he is- mailto:info@gatman.cominfo@gatman.com</A>

Lenny-I sent you an email re:a local Minx. Are you stuck on the Classics-or would you consider GT21/Minx/or a Hornet?(in case I run into anything unadvertised).
Regards-Jeff
BTW-the 18 you looked at has been for sale for almost two years......may be a tough resale if u decide to buy it.
