I just picked up a very tired 68' St. Tropez with a dead SBC. I'm thinking of repowering with a 383 stroker at around 400 hp. Is that too much hp. for the I/O? For that matter, is it too much hp. for the boat?

Just do it! There are many 383 strokers and a few big-blocks turning Volvo-Penta 270, 280, and 290 drives. The Volvo drives are way tougher than Alpha drives and right up there with Bravo drives for durability.

Just for the record, my neighbor runs a stout 502 (600-650 hp, Brodix heads ported & polished, 10:5 to 1 compression, Holley 1050 Dominator) in his 24 Cigarette with a Volvo drive. I broke one of the internal vertical shafts inside the drive once in rough water, we replaced it, now we just don't jump it......she works fine.
