I have made up my mind that I want tunes on the Donzi. I have pondered where I would install the head unit and speakers but taking care not to disturb the looks of the cockpit. My 18 classic is about as original as it gets. Even the seats/cushons are orig. I am stressing over making holes.

These are a few of my ideas:

An obvious place for the speakers is in the gunnels halfway between the front and rear seats. I cannot come up with another logical place for them.

Even if I could squeeze it, the head unit will never go into the dash. There seems to be some room under the dash and to the right by the drivers side knee. I may be able to rig something w/ braces or something. Many of the head units come with wireless remotes and other with remote controls that are mounted to a panel. However, the head unit still needs to be visable in order to change cd's or tune.

The ultimate would be to create a fiber mold that was mounted to the underbelly of the deck and still providing space under it for ski's/life jax, etc.

I would greatly appreciate members sharing their setups with me. Thanks

JP, Clarion makes some nice units that are compatible with their remote control head. You mount the radio head any where you want, plug in the remote to the back of the unit, mount the remote somewhere in the cockpit. The remote comes with 24' of cable, is 2 1/2" diameter. Here's a pic. Lots of other manufacturers make similar remotes. this is just the one I'm most familiar with, its what I have installed. good luck!

Your system is exactly what I want. It sounds great and in stock at most larger marine stores. My issue is where to mount the headunit in a 18 classic. There is not many places to put it and keep it dry. frown

Cut from (DR's) Stereo Installation post on March 23, 2002

(Well I'm not real sure on the dash of the 16 but go under the dash so as not to cut it & so there out of the weather would be best!!! But you must get a extra bat for your system & or a plugin solar panel to recharge your batt banks.

Rockford Fosgate , Denon , Blaupunkt & as always Alpine seem real popular in the car club right now if i had the cash id go with one of those Web radios they do internet radio & regular radio functions to sweet Be sure to get a AMP (for sound quality over quanity) & Speakers with large magnets to ensue they don't blow when your doing 60mph with the tunes cranked all summer!!!
<http://www.crutchfield.com/> is a great place to get started!!
On a Buget try your local Pawn shop Punk kids like to sell there stuff for party money & can be bought cheap from these guys!!!

Something like this to house the speakers maybe bracketed to the underside of the deck (dash) to keep them off the floor & in one place.

& something like this for all the same reasons on the head unit!!!

This way you don't cut the dash or kick panels (resale value) & its easy to Install & easy to take to the next boat you buy!!!

Just some ideas of what i would get:

Marine mid range speakers

To mount the stereo below the dash you can use this from West Marine (http://www.westmarine.com) and search for model number 548594. I used this last season and it will keep the stereo dry, the drawback is since it is water tight the stereo can get very hot and shorten its life. If I was to use it this year I would drill some holes in the bottom, so it could ventilate.
