Since I'm new to this type of engine and drive package, can anyone tell me if there was ever a 454MAG engine rated at 415HP with a carb on top? I didn't think the 400HP engines came until the introduction of the 502 fuel injected motors.

415hp would sound like to me a 502 mag. But I could be wrong. A 454 mag should be 350 or 365 hp

Chris, that's what I thought also. Engine is a 1998 and air cleaner cover says 454MAG, but for some reason on the title, it says 415HP. When idling, there is just a little lope to it. I was thinking maybe there was a special 454 engine that this might be. I'll have to get the serial number off of it. Can you all suggest a good website or book to buy for information?

yep the 502 mag was 415 hp the 454mag was 365 or 385 and the regular 454 being 330 or 350 depending upon year...

Thanks guys. I was at the boat again tonight after work, but I didn't have a pen and paper with me. I'm pretty sure the engine is the 454 and not a 502, but the numbers will tell the story.

if you want to grab the number off the tag that is riveted right to the cylinder block that'd probably be the best way... i know on the smallblocks the tag is just above the starter on the bellhousing lip i don't remember wehre the big block tag is.. but i think in the same general location... and no that wasn't me honking at ya saturday... i didn't notice til i saw the 18 behind ya...

Scott, here is a link that I got from Poodle awhile back, might help, might not, but it does list serial numbers for each motor/parts.

I think the 454 w/carb is 360 HP
454 w/fuel inj 385 HP
502 w/fuel inj 415 HP

My 22 is a 1996 and the guy said it was a 415 HP also. All that does for you is make it cost more in insurence. And it sounds great when trying to sell it.

Mine was the 360 HP.

I bought a 502 short block and put my heads on (after being re worked and roller rockers) with the same carb and intake.

Just sounds a little bit cooler and goes about 4 miles an hour faster.

Show you at AOTH

Scott,
My 502 Mag MPI is rated at 415 HP. It does sound a bit lumpy at idle but don't know if that's cam or slightly rich on the 'puter. I did find out tonight that the large Hardin K&N flame arrester won't fit under the lid by about 3"!! That motor sure is mounted high with only 1/4" clearance. Now if it will quit raining I might learn how to drive the thing before ATOH!!!
