i have been wondering, how much horse power can an engine make per ci? and how much when procharged or turbo'd?

hate to say it but that sounds way to broad of a question to ask..
it also has to do with the design of the particular motor you want to know about and whats it built for...

but one thing is for sure with a endless supply of money you could make a 4cyl over 600 HP

now if your talkin CI 350's -700-800+HP
454-502's 1200+HP

how deep are your pockets.....
thats all that matters..

hmmmmm 500 cubes... 6000 or so hp... gotta love the nitro (cept for your eyes and lungs) eek! ... but i prefer alky wink

for the average joe 1 hp / cu-in is pretty obtainable... well thought out, built and breathing performance motor's can see 1.5 - 2 hp / cu-in on gasoline. switch to alky and you can stretch that to 2.5 hp / cu-in... this is a naturally aspirated state... forced induction changes the whole ball of wax.

example... NHRA Super Stock 1967-69 300 hp 350's are producing around 625 hp with STOCK recontoured cylinder heads sipping VP C-11...

16 nozzle 358 cu-in sprint car motors running alky and direct port injection are approaching 900 hp...

alky has lots of benefits, colder running temp, cleaner burning etc. but what happens if you run out on the water with a bunch of friends? it isnt like you can go to the gas dock and tell them to put gas in it. i know running a bit of gas afterward is reccomened but wouldnt running 20gal of gasoline through an alky carb mess things up a bit?

I think BMW was getting in excess of 1200 HP out of their 1.8L/109ci turbo 4 cylinder in the turbo F1 days. $=HP Rick

i know jamie. 1200hp out of 1.8L wow. i read about one f-1 from last year, bmw with 800 hp and a redline of 18,000!

The fuel to air ratio is way different between alcohol and gasoline.

Gas is approx. 15 to 1
Alcohol is about 7 to 1

You have to run it MUCH richer when running alky.
Now Nitro, well that is even richer. If you watch the Top Fuelers the raw nitro is spitting out of the "zoomys".

those nitro guys really crank the juice to it upon initial fireup so they don't go burning valves and pistons... talk about an instant crowd clearer... guess everyone should take a hint when the crews strap on teh gas masks

HB,
Supercharged; 1.7 hp per ci is getting close to the limit for every day usage. wink

I agree with Rick $=HP. Keep building it until it starts to rattle and make funny noised, then you know you went too far.
