I saw a few posts from a year ago concerning GPS units for measuring speed. The way technology changes, I would like some current opinions as to what models you would suggest. I would like one that can also display some maps of the lake of the ozarks in MO.

I'm looking at the Garmin 162 with the built in ant.
You can purchase new for around $300.00

bought a magellan meridian color from www.vanns.com (http://www.vanns.com) - paid $365, plus a $50 rebate.
only had it a couple of days, but works great so far - I researched the Garmin's and the Magellan's.

I am really happy with my Garmin 176C, however some have said to get the 176 for the black and white display as the color map can be difficult to read in broad daylight.

I currently own 2x Garmin GPS 48s, Garmin 76S and a Garimin 128 with differential.
I've had 2x Garmin GPS 48 require service and my Garmin GPS 128 does not work correctly.

Once you get started with a producy line it is difficult to go to another due to the cost of software. If I was getting started with GPS I'd look at Magellan. The Meridian Marine looks like a fine unit.

If you are going to mount a handheld on dash, get one with front mounted controls.

The electronic compass function on the Garmin 76S and Magellan Platinum does not work unless the unit is mounted horizontally.

I have a Magellan SporTrak Pro that works well and is very accurate. A larger display would be nice but I like the small size of the unit.

RickR is right about the software. It is pricey.

Play with as many as you can before you buy.

Then there's the Lowrance iFinder with a map and the iFinder Olympus with more marine stuff on the maps. About $150 and $200 respectively at Bass Pro Shop. Speed numbers are a little small to read for me. Rick, how do you like the Garmin 76S?

The 76S is a good unit. Waterproof, floats and still works after 10 months  .

Plenty of memory and very versatile page functions (you can enlarge data fields on screen) but map is difficult to read due to all the info on the small screen. It works OK on the boat but when mounted to the dash of the pickup it is not much use.

The electronic compass does not work unless the unit is mounted horizontally. So unless you want the extra memory get the 76 Map.

Basic software (comes free with Magellan) to upload and download must be purchased also.

Software is expensive! Navigational markers are NOT installed for the Tennessee River so I doubt Sidney Lanier's would be. Some Intercostal markers are in the factory software but to get county and rural roads you have to but more software.

How fast will a F-250 Diesel go ???? (Data Fields set on med; current speed over ground {SOG} and bearing 99.1 degrees eek! )

Above 10 mph the compass uses the gps and allows you to position the unit vertical or what ever.

The 76S gives you the option of using the electronic compass or the GPS for navigation. Also it alows you to select the speed for it to switch from one to the other.

The 76 has GPS driven navigation only.

Everyone
A GPS cannot figure its' direction unless you are moving.
When navigating with a GPS at very slow speeds (i.e. looking for your fishing hole) you must have a compass also.
