This question is going back and forth for me on another post. I wanted to put it out there as a post itself. What kind of prop is the best for over-all performance on a 86' classic with a 383 Stroker. The motor I was told the eng. puts out 350-400hp. She has a Alpha drive with I would guess the 1.5 ratio. The motor is turning 5500 rpm's or a little more WOTH. I only see 60 mph give or take a mph. Any advice or opinions you can give is greatly appreciated. Looking for speed, stability, and safe rpm's on the motor. Thanks.....

If you're going to use the 22 offshore, I would look at a Mirage Plus or a large diameter 4 blade.

I dig A LOT eek! of ditches in the Venice/Boca Grande area and would hate to damage or repair a $500+ 4 blade.

Try a few out before purchase. If she is a real hot engine you may have planning problems if you re-prop for 5000 to 5200 rpms.

I am running a Mirage 23 with good results offshore. But I just bought a 21 Mirage Plus to try in South West Fla.

Again the revs seem hi, you did not mention the pitch of the current prop, is it 3 blade, who's prop is it? A 383 stroker can turn some rpms, but the prop needs to match the power output of the motor. If the boat is makeing 60mph the prop sounds like a 21" or even a 19. I 'm not a big fan of small blocks in 22's, it's really not about big HP but a fat torque curve and at what rpm the motor can makes it to move a 3,700 pound boat . I e-mailed a dealer about a 02 22 with a 6.2 liter in it, he was trying to pawn it off as Scorpian. The reason Donzi never put a 377 Scorpian in a 22 is because a stock 496 mag could blow it out of the water and retail for 20 grand less. thats an exspensive graphics package. Even the Scorpian 18 is more bucks than a nice 22.
Big block 22s are usally equiped with a 23 or 25' wheel.

Sponsor Plug - Try a Turbo 1 on the 22 Classic. You'll think you have a 4 blade on her. Boat's handling is much improved due to the smaller diameter of the Turbo prop and since you have less diameter, you can run more pitch. Smaller diameter may also help save the Alpha drive if you should launch the boat and not get out of the throttle in time. (Less torque on re-entry) If the engine will turn 5500 with a 19 or 21, you may be able to go to a 24 or 25 in the Turbo 1 prop. You usually lose 200 RPMs for every additional inch of pitch, but remember, the Turbo is also less diameter which increases engine RPMs. So, the first inch of pitch you add may actually just be a trade-off for the diameter of the Turbo. (A Turbo 1 with 19 or 21 inches of pitch may turn 56 or 5700 RPMs.

I have the 454MAG in my 22 Classic, but gained 3 MPH just by changing to the Turbo 1 and even dropped an inch of pitch from what was on the boat when I bought her.

Donzi Blackhawk- I did finally buy a 22. Its a pretty nice boat out of New York. Looks just like Buddman's and built in 86'.

The prop that she's running now is a 19 pitch, three blade prop and it says Stern's ????? something. The prop is a little rough and should be reconditioned whether I run it, or keep it as a back-up. The engine winds up to 5600-5700 rpms. Seems like thats alot but, with a stroker engine, I dont know. I have heard that a turbo 22 pitch would work well, any suggestions on that prop? :)

As a follow up on the Turbo prop, there is a new one on ebay right now. I believe it is a 22' pitch, and the current bid is under $100.

on my 22 i'm running a 25 mirage and she runs out at 72 mph at 4800 rpms. it handles rough water pretty well also. i have a 26 turbo 1 for a back up.

Without knowing what parts the engine was built with, I'd definetly refrain from running 5600 or more. Most likely the guy had a different prop on it, kept it, and stuck whatever prop he had around on it to sell. If the prop is damaged, it isn't good for the drive either. Hate to see something puke on your new boat right away.

Cuda, I just got off the phone with throttle up and they have a 21 and 23 mirage for me to test for the weekend. Depending on the effect they may have this could be the answer. I appreciate the offer on the trial of using your two from the formula. I may take you up on that offer....

DGII, I will be out of town this weekend, but Debbie will be around if you want to try any of the props. I'm not looking to sell them, just offering them to see if that is what would work for you. I bought the 21 from CDMA, so he may be able to give you input how it performed on his boat. All three are ding free, of course one trip to Shell Island can change that! :)

The two on the bench are the 21's, as you can see, one has a longer "tail" than the other. The one on the boat is a 23.

My buddy also has a 24 Turbo, that he would probably sell. My 355 would turn it fine, but I had a lot of torque list to the port side with it.

Cuda, what did the Bob's lower mod do for ya on speed and handling on that Alpha in the pic?

It was on the drive when I bought it, so I don't have anything to compare it against. I doubt that it did much for it. From what I have read, you need to be running 70 or so before the CLE makes any difference.

I have an '86 22' Classic with a 350/300hp Tempest motor. I'm very satisfied with my Mirage Plus 21". With this combo, engine turns up 5200-5300 rpm and indicated top speed is 67-68mph. Top speed is exactly even with friend's 330hp, 454 22" Classic.
