Jr. & I bought a 1986 Classic 22 from West Sayville, New York, in Long Island on July 4th. The seller pulled it to Santee Junction, South Carolina, where we pulled it the rest of the way to St. Petersburg, in 22 hours of traveling.

It has a 383 stroker engine, 18 monthes old, with Eldlebrook intake manifold & carb, with Alpha drive, and 766 total hours on the boat.

Anybody care to give an opinion about horsepower. The seller said: 400 HP.

to give an accurate estimate you'll have to provide a lot more info on the motor such as cylinder head make and model, intake make and model, carb size, exhaust type, compression ratio and camshaft specifications (type, lift, duration, centerline, lobe seperation).

you can get 400 from a 383 with a well matched system... not too difficult..

First of all congrats on your purchase, gotta love the the looks of the minx,So I bet if you give us your top speed, max rpm and prop make and size we could reverse engineer to get a close no. on how many ponies ya got.

Prop = 19"

Max RPM's 5,500

Ummmmmmm - Speed, no GPS reading yet; but, next weekend, we will. My guess = 65 MPH.

I think you'll see 58-59 mph based on 1.5 gear ratio at those revs and pitch. Do you know the gear ratio??
FWIW

59 mph Does sound about right per what I saw on the gps. I didnt let the boat reach max rpm yet because there are some things I need to do before that. Based on what I have seen that number sounds pretty accurate. What prop should the boat have and what is the best set-up for max all round performance. The engine already has Gil dry exhaust and a few other things. What difference speed and performance will the prop make if its a 19 pitch...should I be turning a different prop, etc.

David,
What 19" prop is on there now? Someone could chime in on what's safe to twist your engine, but not knowing the specifics, it's hard to say.
Right now I'm thinking a 21" prop would be better. You might see 60 plus easily on the top end and might make a better all round prop as well.
As for the size of the prop, smaller is going to allow the engine to turn more rpm's and possibly be slower than a larger prop at lower revs, because of the HP and torque drop at higher rpms.

If your 5500 number is something your positive about with the 19? I would go to a 22 Turbo..

just my opinion, those in various stages of inebriation may disagree :p

Well the prop thats on there is surely a 19 not sure about what kind though. The prop does need to be reconditioned. How much does a 22 turbo cost? How much would it cost just to have the prop that I have reconditioned into a 22 or can that be done? Thank you guys for all your advice as well...

Jim Besst is running a 19 pitch with a 300HP tempest small block. He's running 60 MPH in his 22 Classic at 5100rpm's

Hey Greg I really appreciate you taking the time to look into this info so far for me. Im going to call the prop shop down here tomorrow and see if I can get a Turbo 22 for the weekend. If I do then I will let you know what happens. I have my fingers crossed that this will do the trick.

I turn a 23 Cleaver on my 20 foot Formula with a 355/330 horse. It's been so long since I drove it that I can't remember the rpm at top speed. I imagine the Formula is heavier than the 22 Donzi. You can try it out if you like. I may have a 21 cleaver around here somewhere also. My boat doesn't heel to port as bad with the cleaver as compared to a turbo I had on it.
