Anyone interested in my hatch? I am thinking of reproducing it this fall. But I will need some serious buyers before I can devote alot of time and energy to the project. I believe that Donzi Charges around $1000 for a replacment hatch. So I guess the price would be comparable. Any advice on this or interest please either post or email me. thanks James

Your boat is one of the best Classics I've seen, the scoop is very nicely done also like the hardware and paint. KUDO's

I would love to have a hatch like that on my boat but a grand is too steep for me. You could sell them all day for 550.00

Only problem with that hatch. If I buy one then I will have to modify my motor so it "fits". :D

Very, very nice! I might be interested in one as well, but $1000 is pretty steep. What about converting an existing hatch?

Hey guys,
Yes it looks just like the one you pictured. Yes you can convert an exsisting hatch, that is basically what I did, I made a flat hatch first , than grafted in the aero scoop. But this involves hours of body work go get it right. So I think it would be a bit easier to make a two piece mold and just make new one piece hatches. I can also make them out of carbon fiber if someone has the dough for it. I can't do anything until after my Ceramic exhibit in Chicago the weekend before laborday. The price would also depend on if I hand laid them or got a hold of a chopper gun. Anyone use one of those? would it make it alot easier? I also have the mold I made for my original flat hatch. So if anyone needs a new flat hatch, I can make them as well.

Choppers are fun for the first skin out but for any real strength and to do it properly you probably want a "hand laid" unit. A chopper makes the first skin-coat somewhat "bubble free" but a light (1OZ)mat and a GOOD wet out will accomplish this as well, probably better. Choppers are nice for high-build applications where thickness (quickly) wants to be accomplished OR you have a disgustingly complex set or positive and negative curves and trying to get an initial (void free) skin-coat is a nightmare. A chopper is about $5,000 US to start, on the low end. Look at Indy http://www.spraytechsys.com/gci/gci_chopper.html or GS Manufacturing http://www.gsmfg.com/ for these items.

I dont want to sound stupid.

but why have a hood scoop if its not functional?

my flame arrestor is right in the middle of my scoop, it sticks out about 2 inches.
(theres a hole cut out in the hood for the flame arrestor)I bought a 2 inch carb riser to make my scoop functional.

It gave me bit of a performmance boost, I would think this is from the fresh cold air routed directly to the carb and top end throttle response is crisp.
(I know this because when I take out the hood scoop cover the response in the throttle changes and I get about 100 rpm more)

my hood scoop cost me about 240 bux with the harwood self install hood scoop kit.
*edit*
This post is totaly redundant if you have cut a hole out for the carb on that hood.
sorry....

Clayman,

where did you get the shock kits for your hatch?? I can't find the whole kit with brackets.

James - you have done a fabulous job. That Donzi is beautiful. I love the scoop, black sides, and the way the bow strip tapers is a nice touch.

Congratulations!

Thanks Red Dog. I decided to taper the stripe because I didn't really want the stripe going through the scoop which is about 14.5 inches wide. so I tapered the stripe to just fit around the scoop. IT is about 4 inches in the front and 15 in the rear, it actually gives it a little more of an aggressive look. The scoop is functional, I cut a hole just bigger than the 4" high cleaner/arrestor. I also have a 1 inch carb spacer which puts it about half way inside the scoop. So it is getting a nice shot of cool air. I may someday run a small supercharger like a Holley 144 combined with a shorter arrestor should fit inside the scoop as well. I got the hyd. struts at Boat US and the stainless brackets as well.

Broque,

First of all I know you bought the same kind of scoop and bolted it to your hatch for less money. The cool think about Clayman's is that it is all 1 piece.

Secondly, you ask "why have a hood scoop if its not functional". I would have it on my boat because it looks cool.

And Finally, I don't want to "butcher" my stock hatch by cutting a whole and bolting on a scoop. I would much rather store it away and install a custom hatch with a built-in scoop.

Hi Clayman:

You have developed undoubtably the most eye catching DONZI accessory bar none ! Although most posts indicate expense as a factor, your price is too cheap! For the moment, let us forget the expensive hand lay up, and consider the chopper gun. From the outset, we have to establish multiple molds to cover the initial onset, cost etc. Second, you cannot afford to give up your really talented day job.

A chopper gun would be perhaps ideal for this low stress aplication, however we would want to include our gel coat paint considerations. From my expertise, in a manufacturing consideration, would be the intense labor required to generate the wooden formers, and indeed thier bonding herewith.

Once again, It is a way cool design, DONZI will probaly contact you for future production, bottom line is that I do believe you can sell them for in the market of $2,500 plus or more.
Dont cut yourself short here, I for one will have to have it.

Damn tailwind, where did you learn how to barter? wink

Seriously, Clayman, that is one bad-ass looking boat. And the scoop is without a doubt the classiest, cleanest and "toughest" looking scoops I have ever seen!

Great job!

To be honest, 30 personal plus years in the Observatory business, both aluminum and fiberglass have given some insight here at least for a 45 year old! Check us out when able:

cool you did add a hole to the hatch.

Harbor,

I plan on molding the scoop into the hatch and then paint or gelcoat it.

I meant no harm in saying what I said in the previous post.

THanks Guys, I try really hard at the thiings I do to make things right. The Skull & crossbones flag I couldn't pass up when I saw it at the boat store. I lost it though on a high speed run. I am picking up another one today . I think I am going to make the mold for the hatch this fall when I get some time. pop a few out, then go from there on selling them. After I know how much time I have in them. As a few other people stated, my pottery is my business, and it is hard to work on other things and price those things when the art market has no ceiling. Meaning, a piece of pottery I sell today will be worth more in a few years, the hatch won't. And, the same piece could be $500 or $50,000 depending on the artist reputation. Art is perceived value, the hatch is market value. But, I will be really doing it for fun, and the experience of it all. thanks for everyones input.

hmmmm, I got an idea for you....

how bout making a single canopy(or dual) top that fits exactly like the cockpit cover.

then cut out a front and rear section and install clear lexan windows.
maybe even mold some louvers into the canopy for ventilation.

I would love to see one of these.

I had made a FOE "donzi for sale" post about a 18' classic that was purple with a yellow stripe down the center, custom canopy. a stroked 351w (421 C.I.) arneson asd6 drive , pro charger.

though the one thing that makes this canopy unique is that the driver and navigation man sit on the back seat.

can you picture this clayman?

that would be crazy.

Clayman, I guess it's true, a great artist's talents are not limited to the medium he works in most frequently.
How about a fibreglass hatch/cover/filler that covers the area from the back of the buckets to the rear seat. Sort of like the hard tonneau cover Saleen makes for the Mustang convertible.

It's easy to dream, as long as you're not the guy elbow deep in resin. :D http://www.saleenunlimited.com/images/s281e/beryllium_003.jpg

damn thats a sweet idea too
i think porsche does that with there carrera speedster as well..I woudl think the cover would get blown off if there is no piece that goes down to the floor of the back of the buckets.

damn all this talk about boats has gotten me revved up.
im goin down the shore! later guys!

Not to detract from Clayman's super job, I also like the look Pony Boy has on his X-18. Its kinda a molded in GTX stlye with rounded intakes molded on the sides. Anyone have a good picture of it?

Tim - Here is the best shot I have of Steve's X-18 from Cumberland. Wish it were focused a little more on the scoop, but it should give everyone the idea. Nice job on both scoops and adding your own personel touch to your boats.

Oh the possiblities. Moody blu, you lost me on the idea until I saw the picture. That would be a big job. I really like the cover for the back seat. I often take a sunset cruise around my lake, and am usually by myself. So I just open up the driver area of my cockpit cover and tuck it behind my seat. works pretty good, and sort reminds me of the old Porsche 356a's .Humm....

If anyone wants an X-18 engine cover to play with let me know. It is not hard. I could ship to Boxy in Toronto and he could forward it from there. A number of these would be best and they would be quite cheap as they would be paint grade and no scoop. Let me know.

Scot Van A,...sorry, not yet. The pics will start panning towards the bow soon. Not on that one. That was one of the the "mules". Others abound within... wink

The "real one" that is coming to a new home means a lot more to me... :)

clayman if you make that cockpit that would be insane.
of course the hatch would have to open towards the bow, so if there were motor problems they could open the hatch and check the motor compartment....

I think you could make that canopy so the front seats were useable (instead of my crazy idea of a rear seat driving position. that would cost lots of money to do.

not easy to dream in elbow deep resin? do you carry a seperate O2 tank? ive only done fiber glass work once, i mad the mistake of not opening the garage on a cold winter day...

that is one of the best if not the best classic i have ever seen. carbon fiber would look so awesome with the black on the rest of it.

clean engine compartment.
