I'm looking online for fenders and I saw those flat fenders, you know the ones, and I thought "how perfect they'd be to stow in the storage bin under the floor". Problem is, I don't know which size to buy and my boat's not nearby to measure.
What are the dimensions of the storage bin under the floor (length and width), and for that matter, what are the dimensions of the battery compartment under the rear seat?

Hey Flat-Racer, I have a '66 18'. Or I should say I have a bunch of parts in my garage that resembles and someday again will be a '66 18. The storage locker under the floor aka:beercooler measures 12"x 29", the battery box measures 12"x 22". Keep in mind that each of these tapers inwards a little and these measurements were taken form the top.

Instead of the flat bumpers, I use bumpers that are made for ski boats. These are "L" shaped bumpers that protect the sides and lap over the rub rail onto the gunnels. The 18 sits so low that the deck can get caught under the edge of the dock. These bumpers work great in that they protect the sides, rail, and deck. I just tie them to the deck handrail. Never had a single ding. They are available from West Marine and Overton's.
Give them a serious look.

Thanks guys. I saw someone using those curved bumpers on an 18 at Lake George. Perhaps that is the way to go.

Ditto on the L shaped "low-freeboard fenders", they work great and fit nicely in the floor storage compartment.

I have two almost brand new Taylor White low freeboard bumpers/fenders in the L shape that you are describing. The first $25 takes both of them home. I will pay the shipping.

I use the blue flat fenders, (the ones with the "hinge" in them, $9.99). I use a marine bungee slipped through the "hinge" and clipped onto the handrail. I've rafted up with everything from a 53' Hatteras to Krakmeup's 18 2+3. They work like a champ, and fit perfectly into the ski storage under the dash.

Can someone post a pic of these L shaped fenders? and maybe also the flat fenders in question here?

thanx, J

Hi Jim,

Here you go from WestMarine.com
Taylor Low-Freeboard Fenders

http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=10001&productId=24154&catalogId=10001&classNum=594&subdeptNum=11207&storeNum=5

I have the small ones and they work well on my low profile Carlson. :) But that was last year. frown

Here's a shot of the fender in use, but this was before we figured out how to hang 'em. Janet actually came up with the idea to use bungees. They snug right up against the gunwhale. Two of these fender stow out of sight in the "ski storage" area, with the bungees laying alongside. http://www.donzi.net/photos/jimgfender.jpg
