Anybody have any data/opinions on the size of flame arrestor needed for various engine types? I am about to recieve and install my 383 stroker and I dont know if the stock 260 Mercruiser arrestor will be sufficient.

I have been happy with the arrestor made by "Holley". It is well made and has a large surface area. They make a variety to fit most all carb. types. Dave

Paul, When I switched from a Stock Volvo 350 ci, 300 hp to a 383ci, 375-400hp the original flame arrestor was too restrictive. I gained 2mph by removing the Flame Arrestor. Soon I found a larger one. I purchased an Aluminum Arrestor 4" high, removed the top and cut the screen so it would just fit under my hatch, approx. 3" high, then siliconed the top of the arrestor back on. Stainless steel arrestors cost $ 100 to 200.00, Aluminum work fine and cost alot less, and are easy to modify. GEOO

Paul, My PAW catalog, shows the folowing specs for thier holley flame arrestors - 5.75"x2" tall for 350-600 cfm, 5.75"x3"tall for 600 to 700 cfm and the biggest 8"x3" tall covers 600-800 cfm. I would put the largest diameter on there I could since the 18 is short on hood clearance. Just as with cars, te bigger air cleaner the better. I chose the 8"x3" Barbron from Eddie Marine - $59. Good price. Hope your engine works out well. I must tell you though, after spending all the money on my 350, 70 mph still seems a ways off. Just do`nt blow up your drive on the second trial run like I did! Man I hope this new Alpha can take it, goodluck with yours. Keep us informed.

Paul O,
Check out K&N, they make a USCG approved flame arrestor with a stainless top and base. I have one on my 2+3, and it works very well. I only have a 350 not a 383. but they do make larger sizes. Your going to have to look for it though, the last time I checked they didn't have it on their web site. Good luck.
