View Full Version : Is my zinc ring protruding...
so much as to cause excessive turbulance? The distance from it to the body of the lower unit is about 1/8"...and I wonder if that might be why my 14 x 24 Volvo Ultra is not hooking up very well. Any thoughts?

Not sure but to me it looks like it is airing the prop and starting to pit it. Is that the correct zinc? I will try to remember to look at the ones laying around the yard. I have seen a drain plug with two washers under it cause that very same thing.
Tony,
I too am having the same problem. I have a 280 drive, but my zinc ring is flush with the housing.
But yet I have an Ultra 26 pitch that seems to air out. I was wondering if it has anything to do with the diameter of the prop's hub being to close or larger than the base face it matches up to on the drive. But then again maybe it's the drain plug. It's been driving me crazy
TD,
What engine and boat are you running with your Ultra 26? That is a prop I would like to try someday, but they are hard to find. One theory I have is that my rebuilt engine is way stronger than my last one, with more torque, specifically. In which case I may need more pitch than 24". I'll be doing some more testing, the prop in the picture is a 14 x 23 aluminum short hub.
At AOTH 2 my Ultra slipped so bad I switched to a 14 x 21 aluminum, which got me out of the hole in an awful hurry but wound me up to 5500 rpm's which I don't like.
I marked my Ultra like Scott B. suggested and will make certain it is not spinning the hub. Hopefully this testing will occur tomorrow.
My ring was flush with the drive on my old volvo and I ran a 14x22 ultra with excellent results. It was by far the best prop for my boat...well that I tried.

I was expiriencing the same thing at AOTH II.
Baby blue 18. Scot B.'s old boat. Small block with Chris Craft package. Wow I wish I would have known you were having same trouble so we could have swapped um around to see what was going on.
You have the solid red 16 with the wraparound windshield, right??

That doesn't look like the correct zinc for that drive. Also, the factory hub in a Ultra is junk and will slip and slip badly after time. It will cost you about $95 plus shipping to have a Michigan Volvo hub retro-fitted into the Ultra. You won't be able to hurt the Michigan hub either. It requires machining the hub cavity of the prop to make it fit. Admiral C&B Propellers (http://www.acbprop.com/) in Tampa is the place to send your Ultra for hub work. They turn the job around an about two days so you summer down time is minimal.
