View Full Version : Alpha One to Alpha SS, need props....

Anyone who has gone from Alpha One to Alpha SS, please contact me about props. I would like to test 2 or 3 along with my current prop when my Alpha SS arrives next week. I have a Minx 20. If anyone has a Minx or a 22 with 350 mag/Alpha SS combo, I would like to test a similar prop.

I am currently turning a Mirage 23 at 4700 rpm at 59.5mph on GPS with my 350 mag/Alpha One. I am hoping the Alpha SS will increase my top speed when matched with the right prop. I would like to stay at or below the 4800 rpm range.
Is there a 24 of some type I should try? What about a 25? Would a 23 Mirage PLUS do anything my regular 23 Mirage won't do?

Anyway, please give me your input.

Thanks,
Scott Smith

Stix's,

You will need to know what your new final drive ratio is and see if it is the same as you current unit. To know how much to increase your prop pitch or not from what you have now.

1.47 thru 1.50 to 1 ratio's are for s/block V-8's
1.34 thru 1.36 to 1 ratio's are for big block's!

SS Alpha's came in different ratio's for varied applications.

Enjoy,
Walt.....

i've been running the quad IV a bit on my 16/SS... really wonderful for rough water and stability in my little hull. you do give up a wee bit on top end cause it takes more oomph to spin that big thing.. 8-9% slip from 3000 to WOT though... lovely for cruising!

i wish i could help more, apples to apples, but my drive ratios differ. My GEN II was 1.47, the SS is 1.59. I was spinning a stock 23 Pitch Mercury cleaver 5400 rpm @ 68.0 mph. after teh SS conversion i have seen 75.8 (at 6000 rpm) with a labbed 25 mercury cleaver, 75.6 (at 5500 rpm) with a 27P quad IV O/T , 74.0 (@ 5700) with a 24P quad IV - no diffuser ring and so far 72.3 (@ 5300) w/ 25P quad IV w/ diffuser ring... i have removed the diffuser but i have not run the boat yet... i am told it is worth 1 - 3 mph.

i have yet to run a 3 blade such as a turbo or a mirage... the 16 really didn;t care for round eared 3 blades in GEN II form so i am a bit leary to run one now i guess, that and i don't have one lying around in 25 - 27 pitch... plus i really really , did i say REALLY, love the ride of the 4 blade...

BUT from 16 and 18's going from a regular drive to an SS generally 6 - 10 mph increase... i'd almost bet on 2-3 inches in pitch increase to maintain the same rpm...

Walt,
The SS I bought is 1.5:1 so the ratio is the same, just less drag with shorter X dimension.

Rootsy,
Forrest said the same about the props for his 16. I am going to run the Alpha SS with my current prop and watch the rpms. I wonder if I could maintain rpms with a 25 Mirage. Unlike the 16 and 18, the Minx at 20 feet could use the lift the Mirage offers. Am I right about this?

ANYONE HAVE A MIRAGE 25 RH for sale?

Scott

Stixs,

I think a 25" pitch would be a wise choice, might have been a mph improvement with your standard Alpha.

Definitely worth the try with the SS, I doubt if you could go wrong.
Keep us posted with your progress and how it runs.

Stix,
Watch e-bay for a Mirage, for some reason there are always a lot of them up for bid at a low reserve.your right about the lift for top end but may want a four blade later for rough waters.

Look, I have a RH labbed 25 Mirage Plus for sale, but I would rather you wait until you get your drive before you start prop testing.
Rootsy's drive is different than the rest of the SS drives in the country, or the world for that matter. I know, I used to own it.

yes it is gene, and i like it that way! no crap sucked up in low water pickups to congest my poor cooling system and cause her to overheat!

that Mod VP Outboard CLE case rocks so far... gotta love the torque tab! but i wonder what she robs ya in speed!

The fact that you own the drive has totally robbed me of all speed! eek!
But...it did pay for two months of rent and bills! wink

Smoothie,
No rough water here. Sometimes I wish there was. Usually like glass. Great for casual boating, fishing, wakeboarding, etc. but not the best Donzi water.

Gene,
Please email me with a price on the 25 Mirage. I will have the SS by the weekend of the 12th and would like to try props then or soon after. If it doesn't do well with the Minx/350mag/Alpha SS, I will sell it easy enough.
