I have a '99 z22, and the gear shift takes quite a bit of umph to get into and out of gear, as well as increase throttle. Any suggestions?
Could be the cables, try disconnecting them at the engine. That should at least tell you if its in the box and cables.

After you disconnect cables from engine and shifter is still stubborn. What next? Is there a way to lube these cables? If shifter and cables need replacement, can glass be cut so as to acess back side of shifter and be replaced with a backer plate attached to shifter mechanism? The idea is to cover the big hole you made.I hate to take the top cover off the boat again.
I put a way to lube cables in the post "shift plate mounted cutout switch question" If its the cables from the box it works quite well. I do not recommend doing the cable from the converter to the drive that is better changed out.
