My "new" 18' Barrel - Back carries serial # 18-117. It's registered as a '69, but we all know it's older than that. Question is, how much older?
Rootsy, who checked it out for me (Thanks again Rootsy), told me it was 12 boats after Bertram Boy's which is a '66! So is my boat a '66, a '67 or a '68???

I would guess early 67.

As I know it:
Late 65 (maybe)- 66 = triple hatch barrelback.
Late 66-68 single hatch barrel back starting at about hull 100 (?) and going to hull 226 (?).
69- Round keel straight back.

I have barrelback # 226 and it is a 68. I have never seen a later one and I know 234 is a straightback. So I think I have a later one.

Will you be at Lake George?

My boat is a straight back #24? the last digit is missing. What is really confusing is that the '69 brochure shows a barrelback in it. I have seen '69 barrelbacks advertised for sale. I would love to see a hull number. Apparently with no need for HIN numbers back then and other management issues a few barrelback hulls were completed and titled as '69's. I think the best way to tell is by engine hatch configuration, original engine and any thing else you can put together!

Poodle,

Emmo's boat has always been the odd ball. I always thought is was a little strange and figured it was just mistitled. Not sure about down south but I know up here some states if you walk in and say "its a 67" they will take it. That being said I now know for sure that it is in fact a 68...

Doesn't the story go that some sat around in the factory and weren't rigged until '69???
Perhaps mine was one of those.

The '66 barrel back that I am in the, on again, off again, restoration mode with is a single hatch. Ser.#92. There is a Sept. date in there also. We did some discussion on this a while ago and there is someone on the board with a Donzi several months earlier than mine that is a triple hatch. Hope this helps. Greg

My '66(?) is a triple hatch with the stern light in the transom, not on a mast. No HIN found so far but the original fuel tank has a serial number tag with the date 3-8-66.

In the 60's dealers of boats and import cars were able to title or register the vehicle in the year that is was sold. I had a Triumph TR4 that was registered as a year newer than the manufacture date. When I bought parts, it was by engine # not by registration year. I'm pretty sure this is the reason for later than expected barrelbacks
