I also have a Carb.

I like messin with my motors, can't help it. The motors I know about however are Pontiac and I don't remember any marine stuff ha ha. I have used Lunati Cams before and had great luck. I would like to build a balanced roller motor.

What is hotter about the MAG engines (454)?

I have a 1996 454 Mag/Brovo 1 with a 24 pitch prop I think a book said 350 hp. How fast should my 22 classic go? My speedo(VDO) said 72 mph. How much error? I hope it is at least 67 mph??

How fast is slightly hopped up 502 in a 22 classic?

Thanks
chris

I too have a '96 22' Classic with 454 Mag, 350 h.p.I have best results so far with a 23" Mercury Mirage Plus prop. With a fairly light load, I can turn 5000 rpm. Speedo indicates 73-74. GPS says 67-68.I tried a 24" prop but lost 300-400 rpm.Speed was down a bit as well. This is with a bone stock engine.

I believe MerCruiser "Magnum" engines have a forged crank, forged connecting rods and forged pistons. This makes a great shortblock for a motor build-up.

You are right, 350 horsepower is what MerCruiser rated the 454 mag in 1996. A few years back, our dealer here in town had a 1996 22 with the same engine, the salesman said the boat would run 62mph.

You have a great engine to hot-rod, I am partial to Chevy but I doubt anybody here would say a 454 is a poor motor to work with.

Good luck with the boat and motor.

Don't forget to think "SUPERCHARGED" balanced roller motor. If you get a chance, go to the Registry and check out the 1970 Hornet "WA LO" owned by John & Kathy Shahbas. A very nice looking blown big block Ford. It's inspiring, even for a Chevy guy like me.

Magnums also have a High Rise GM Intake and Hi Perf retangular port heads.
Must be a big difference between the 95 (Mark 5) with a flat tappet cam and the 96 (Mark 6) with the roller cam
My 95 22 Classic only runs 62 GPS. http://www.donzi.net/ubb/frown.gif

What's the diameter (or Model #) of your Mirage Plus?
Thanks

Saw a 1998 22' classic for sale recently with a 502 and a Procharger. The add claimed 93 mph. Wanted $43,000 or $45,000. Also know of a 22' Blackhawk locally with a Procharger and he runs in the low 90's. I am not sure what makes the 454 a magnum, but by pulling a valve cover and looking at the casting number of the heads will tell if you have the big rectangular heads or the smaller oval port. It would take 2 or 3 502 Mags with prochargers to get a 22 classic to do 92 MPH and it would take someone with a death wish to pilot it to that speed.
