I just found this board looking for some info for a friend thinking about a 95 22' classic. It's a 95 with a 300HP 454, 23P prop. First, what top speed would this likely have? Second, would you recomend it for Lake Erie? Lastly, what would be a good price? 100 Hrs, looks perfect. Thanks

SinkRay: the 300 is a 454, and the base
big bock package at that time, I think that
Donzi my have even offered the
350 Magnum in the 22, but I am not sure.
Anyhow you can expect speeds in the
mid 60s . I know someone who has a
22 set up the same way and thats what
it ran. He recently dropped in what looks
like a warmed up HP 500, now this boat
really kicks, 80+ mph. As for price I am
not sure , I think this boat originaliy sold
in the mid to high 30s new. I looked at
a new 454 based 22 with MPI making
370hp a 70+ mph boat with an asking
price of 42K. Fasteddie recently
purchased a nice 502 powered 22 last
year mayby he can help you out.
Good Luck

The 300HP 454 is a non-Magnum engine. I've heard that they have two-bolt mains, iron crank, and the heads aren't as good as those on the Mag.

If you're thinking of just running a boat, it'll probably do fine. If you want to "hot rod" it, you might want to wait for one with the four-bolt motor and more bullet-proof components...

If you're planning to replace the engine w/ a 502, or something, this might be the ticket.

I just bought a 95 22 Classic w/454 Mark 5 Magnum (350HP stock) runs 62MPH @ sealevel GPS.
She needs a better prop and some hull work, after that I expect around 65.

Still,

That's got to be a disappointment after that other hot rod of yours...

Actually, that's about what my 22 runs, too, but I've got a cone and cleaver on an Alpha drive -- a little more streamlined than the Bravo, I suppose.

When are you going to install a Bulldog in that 22...

I have thought about the 540 but the longer stroke bothers me. Seems like a 4.375 stroke would be better for a HEAVY slow boat.

Have any idea what my 225 hr 454 Mag would be worth w/Thunderbolt 5 ignition, intake and Merc/Weber carb. I even have a good set of cast iron OMC 454 freshwater manifolds to throw in.

Hey Rick,

Look for a 540 built from a Merlin tall deck block with long rods and light pistons. Speed-O-Motive has a short block just like this, but so do other people. Check out http://www.speedomotive.com/540_sportmaster.htm and consider the 10.2 tall block with longer rods. Spacers to use between the Heads and Intake are readily available. "If more is better, then too much is just right!" rj

Rick,

You know, marine engines simply don't seem to turn that fast...

A 5000 RPM long stroke big block would be very "doable" and durable. Have you thought about going w/ a 1.32:1 Drive in the bargain as well? My guess is that you have a 1.5:1 now.

SinkRay,

Is this the 22 Classic at Sundog Marina?

Rayjay, I think you could only use a jet drive with that 540. 776 hp @ 7500 rpm's!!! GEOO

Geoo,

Use a milder cam with one of the lower compression ratios. But with long rods you can run a higher compression before you have problems. A friend's car has a version of this engine with AL oval port heads, ported for velocity not all out flow, short cam with lots of lift, runs on 89, and has over 600#ft of torgue from 2500 on up. He has a Doug Nash 5 speed which is overkill as you only need second and fifth even though his rear gear is a 2.78. Would make a great boat engine. rj

Nah, Rick. Just paying you back. I fell in "lust" with your 18' and have been trying to figure how to live with something lees than what you have done. Of course I don't believe in big rectangular port heads for anything but an all out race motor. Wait... Now there's an idea.... Use a supercharger to over come the inherent lack of low speed velocity in rectangular port heads.....
Actually, some of the prices for engines assembled with Merlin blocks and heads are very comparable to Chevy prices for 502 HO crate motors, and they're 40 cubes (or more) bigger. Plus you can pick and choose the pieces, like the cam and rods, that you want.

Rick-

Your going to get a new trailer soon, right? So your 22' will be going 70MPH in no time. http://206.150.187.82/ubb/wink.gif Oh, 70MPH on the trailer isn't going to do much for you is it? http://206.150.187.82/ubb/rolleyes.gif

With the new upgrades to my Turbo Diesel F250(ATS Exhaust, new pump and injectors) I bet she'll run 80. http://206.150.187.82/ubb/wink.gif
