Hi, I have a 66 Classic 18 2+3. It has a ford 302, OMC 190hp drive. I have owned it since 74, and am starting to restore it again.

In reading the OMC service book, it appears that the difference between a 302 - 190hp and a 351 - 235hp, are the heads, cam and carb.

Do any of you have experience in upgrading hp like this. Is that all that needs to be changed, or more?

Also, I would think that if I upgrade the engine, that I either have to take it easy on the drive, or change the gears in the drive to match the new HP.

Thanks for the help.

Alex,

The 302 and 351 Fords use different blocks. Heads, cam and carbs are indeed different, but the main difference is the block. Additionally, the 351 comes as a Cleveleand or a Windsor model. Hope this helps.

Thanks, I had a 351 Cleveleand in a Mustang and didn't think it would be this easy. Do any of you know if the 351 engine will hook up to the OMC Intermediate Housing from a 302 - 190hp.

The bellhousing mounting is the same for a 302 or Windsor 351. The heads are the same on late models, unless you have an HO then the valve size is the same as the '69 '70 heads. The big difference is 49 cubic inches.

The engine is 1974, it is not an HO. My last question is: for 49 cubic inches, is this worth thinking about?
