Ralph, send me your fax number and I will send you the spec sheets I got from K&N. There are a few filters you can use depending on the dia and the height you have to work with. Or call K&N @ 1-800-858-3333 or 1-800-882-7223, they can help you on boat applications.

Sam,

How does that Performer RPM fit under the hatch? how big of an air cleaner did you end up using?

James I can't give you an answer just yet but it should be in the 2- 3 inch range. I had a small delay in getting a part in so things are going back together this week. As soon as I have a clear answer I'll let you know.

Waleye..

I have a K&N on my Buell.... and I have to say it really works well. Anything that can let your motor breathe better is a good thing. I will be getting one for the Donzi soon.

I don't know how a K&N flows versus a standard baffled flame arrester but i put one in my 98 F150 not long after it was brand new (90,000 miles now) and i instantly saw a 2 mpg increase in fuel milage (yeah it surprised the heck outta me)... maybe i'll have to put my flame arrester and a comparable K&N on the flow bench this spring and get some numbers... would be an interesting experiment...

Sam, if you'd fax me that K&N list you have i'd be most appreciative... my fax # is 616 962 5624

James, I faxed you what I have so far but I called K&N today and ordered a complete marine catalog. I also talked to a K&N tech rep regarding my specific application and recieved the following information. When ordering a non stock application you need the following information.

1. Carb flange dia, most 4 brls are 5 1/8."

2. Outside dia of filter.

3. Height of filter.

4. CFM of carb, not sure what difference that makes unless it has to do with the paper element type.

5 Inside dia of oil vent tubes, ( for proper vent clips )

In my case I will need a 9 inch X 3.75 P.N. 59-3264, this includes the base, filter and U.S.C.G. stamped chrome top.

The three elements recommended by K&N for high performance marine SBC with Quadrajet carb are #59-3214: 14" dia., 5-1/8" flange dia., 2.25" element height, 3.87" total height, no velocity stack. Or 59-3314: 14" dia., 3.0" element height, 4.62" total height, no velocity stack. Or 59-3414: 14" dia., 5-1/8" flange dia., 4.0 element height, 5.62 total height, no velocity stack. Go with the tallest one you can fit under the hood. You'll need a K&N Marine Vent Hose Kit also. These come in a range of sizes and lengths. Try Cal Performance at 1-800-350-7110 for good prices.

P.S. the metric to inches conversion for 59-3314 is 4-5/8" total element height. For 59-3414 it's
5-5/8" total element height.

Good Luck

Your only restriction on the O.D. will be how close it will come to your exhaust. I am still using a stock system so the elbows are quite high, maybe a new exhaust next year. At any rate anything will be an improvement over the tiny OEM filter that came off of it.

actually, the k&N i put on last year is a 9 x 3 i think? maybe a 10? and the area where i find interference isn't side to side or directly above the carb but behind the carb between carb and distributor at the hatch. my engine sits really low in the front and the pad of the intake adds to that angle and the back edge of the air cleaner is higher than the middle... what i have now fits (by maaaaaybe 1/2 inch) just isn't coast guard approved.. ie the little j # stamp... i am probably gonna go rpm or rpm airgap when i replace my heads and that is 3/4 inch higher than the performer i have at the moment...

I have a K&N on my 302 Ford engine. When I bought the boat, the intake had a 1/2" spacer between the carb and intake. I'm running a 650CFM Holley double pumper. My K&N filter is the same size that it appears James has. In order for it to fit, I had to take the spacer out from below the carb and then because the back edge of the filter was still to high, I took my engine hatch to a fiberglass body shop. Because my hatch (1969) was thick enough, they were able to cut out some of the material to allow enough space for the air filter. Just a thought for you guys who only need a little more space. Also, I have word from a friend who put the K&N on a big HP engine and dynoed with and with-out. This person found very little HP gains between K&N and other filters. Have no reason to doubt this person, but wouldn't mind reading more from someone who has tested the K&N vs others. :)
