I recently purchased a 1989 18ft Donzi classic from and elderly gentleman here in the Bahamas. The serial number is DMRCA016J889.The engine i am told is a chevy 350 and it has a OMC drive. Can you tell me if this was the original engine application. Also what is the best way to tell a 305 from a 350.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Regards,

Kaiser :)

yes, 89 would be an omc donzi equipped with a chevy engine and king cobra outdrive, strong drive but parts maybe hard to find, there are people hear who have them and love em. check the registry and model list at the top of the page.

The earlier Cobra Drives used shift dogs in the base of the foot (like the Alpha) and were picky about setup. If yours shifts easily (one finger), all is well. If not, you need to have it adjusted by a compenent serviceman. One nice thing about these drives is that the raw waterpump is serviceable from the back of the foot -- simple.

The later drives -- like after 1990 or 91??? -- used cone clutches like Volvos and Bravos. I've heard that they were bulletproof.

I don't remember for sure, but I think a distinguishing feature is that the early Cobra had a flat top and the later had a dome to support the upper clutch and bearing????

To distinguish b/w a 305 and 350, grab the casting number off the lip on the rear of the block where the bell housing meets the block. Should be something like 3970010 or some 7 digit #. Then look it up on the internet, or post here.

Cast into the top of the block behind the cylinder heads witll be either GM 5.0 for the 305 or GM 5.7 for the 350. The letters are about 3/4" high.

For a detailed description of the numbering and to check out your specific serial number go to wwww.mortec.com/location.htm
