I noticed that my skeg is broken... aprox 1” gone from the lower piece right in front of prop...at the back. Seems like a weird place to break considering no dings on prop. Should I have it fixed or leave it. Any performance issues? Thanx

If it was mine I would file it smooth & re-paint it. I don't think you will notice any performance change unless your boat runs over 70 or so.

This is common because if the prop finds a small branch or throws a small rock up, thats exactly where it will wedge and break as the prop spins it against the skeg.

Curious is it a Merc Dou Prop? If so that is very common it did not break it burned off from electrolisis. Every single one we have in the yard is burned some real bad, another thing Merc ignores!

I have even noticed some deterioration even on single prop late Merc drives with S/S props, Nothing like the Dou's. Its easy to tell a break will be alot rougher, the burn is grayed and alot of time cupped out just bit. We have quite a few now with the little block style tab zincs on them. CUMMINS does it look like a break or like it burned?

It is a single prop Merc Bravo Drive on a 22 classic 502. The break looks jagged.

Sounds like it is a break, the burn is fairly smooth and a darker gray also sort of cupped. The break stays light and rough as you discribe. Heck make it smooth, paint it and go play!

A cheap way to fix it is to put a skeg gaurd on the lower unit. The guard slips right over the skeg after you sand it down ofcourse.. Just an idea for you. I had one on a flat's boat and it worked well. Not sure if it will present the same effect to a performance boat. I assume it would though....
