I've finally decided to break down and buy a tow vehicle and I'm trying to estimate the maximum weight I'll be pulling.

24' Doral Supersport empty 3900 lbs
Full tank of gas (100 gallons@6lbs/gallon) 600 lbs
Trailer (27' trailer cut down to size) 2000 lbs
Misc. Items ???

Q. How much should I realistically expect gas, misc. items to weigh? The trailer weight is a guestimate.. what is a realistic number to use?

Weigh it at a local truck stop, then there is no guessing. Worked for me, we now have the right trailer, thanks to MPoodle for advice when I needed it.

Now that I've got a 24' boat, I'm not even considering the BMW.. I've been comparing the towing capacities of several SUVs and wanted to find out whether I needed to eliminate vehicles that were only rated for 6000lbs, etc.

I have a Chevrolet 2002 Crew Cab 1500HD 6.0L 300H.P., which is a 3/4 chasis rated to tow 9,000#'s with the auto trans. I have owned it for 16 months and just turned 50,000 miles. When you live out west, everything is 400/600 miles away. I have towed for approx. 4,000 miles this last year pulling loads around 5,000#'s and have found it very stable and high speed capable. I average 16mpg empty, never higher, and I usually average around 12mpg towing. I try to run at 75mph with the range being from 60mph to 85 mph. As stated earlier, you can tow with anything, but changing lanes and stopping bring a whole new level of excitement with a small tow vehicle.
