Regarding the Chronology:
Just to get a basic feel for the life of the Donzi Company so far; the company has gone thru two distinct stages of growth and one transitional phase across six owners.
The first stage of Donzi are the years 1964 to 1985. During this time Donzi was a very limited production company and never put out more than 50 boats a year. This would suggest that there are fewer than 1100 Pre-85 Donzis total. Also, in 1967, Aronow raced a few specialized boats that were labled both Donzi and Magnum. These are Magnum race boats.
Donzi then went thru a transitional expansion when it was bought by Dick Genth and Gordon Houser - both ex-Chris Craft executives. During these years, 1985 to 1988, Donzi production doubled with new facilities in Sarasota FL. and the introduction of the Z-boats, the Regazza 25 and 6 of the 65' Sportfishermen were made before the large boat line was sold to the italian firm of Roscioli. In 1988, Donzi was essentially forced into a partnership with OMC due to the way the large power plant manufacturers were limiting engine and drive packages to the smaller builders. This was the beginning of the great mergers that sucked up almost all of the smaller builders into the three big umbrella Corporations of Brunswick, Genmar and OMC. OMC, being a bottom line Corp, then also expanded the Donzi line to include more conventional family boats. This trend was continued when Donzi was then sold to American Holdings in 1995, though there was and is a new effort to strengthen the performance roots of the company.

Thanks for all the e-mails.

Allan Brown Posted -

I left Donzi on Halloween, 1967, and until then, we had not built any stinkin' outboard 16's. It was a product of the Chisholm brothers after the recession of 1970. Jr., your time table is a little off. Aronow, 64 up to April 65. Teleflex, April 65 to Halloween 67. Chisholm brothers, Halloween 67 to Genth.

Brownie

- end quote

I see an older list got put back on top, so I'm putting the more recent one ahead.
But I gotta ask, Brownie - Is there really a difference in ownership between Teleflex and the Chisholm family or is this just a problem of definitions. In other words, was donzi divested from the company Teleflex into sole ownership by the Chisholms?

I'll get to work on the corrections.

Hey, I'm just going by what Brownie Says..

Here's a trial ballon on a different format.

Presented here is a different way of looking at the list. They are presented under the company that first offered the design in the order in which they were offered. For simplicity, none of the derivitive models are included. This list makes more sense if OMC sold Donzi to American Holdings in early 94, as this is where there are alot of changes. Viewed in this way, you can clearly see some of history of series introduction and design changes.

There were several 65 and 66 outboards sold. I have a "stinkin" 1965 16 outboard that was sold to Gerry Walin by Donzi. He used it as a test mule for the starflite IV and it still has the motor on it. I know of another 1965 "stinkin" 16 outboard that was used by Mercury for testing in 1966 on Lake X and was destroyed while in tow in Lakeland Florida. Donzi also build another "stinkin" 1965 19 foot outboard and it was built for the great Jerry Langer who drove it to first place at the 1965 Sam Griffith Memorial. I believe that Allan Brown is a treasure of Donzi history and a wonderful part of this registry. I am only sorry that my boat offends him so.

With the second list, there are some interesting connections to be made. For instance. I have always thought the Classic 22 (81) predated the Criterions (78). But it looks to be the other way around. Poodle sent me some info that confirms these were designed by Walt Walters. You can also clearly see that the Minx, Z 21, Firefox 25, 29 and Crossbow 33 are related boats. The Genth era Regazza 25, also appears to be a different species than the later Regazzas. The Lavante 30 , which looks like the prototype for the later LXC boats is really a mystery boat here, as I have a photo of a Searay 30 that is a dead ringer. I wonder if OMC just renamed some of their other designs to fill in the conventional family line of cabin boats.

Also, guys please don't embed img files here. Use the URL command, as I have to edit this list often and each time I have to load up the image files it takes time..

Thanks.

Interesting owen. I too thought the Criterion was built on the 22 hull or was it in reality the 22 was built on the Criterion hull...or are they different hulls?

I'm going back thru all the messages, and the knowledge is there. Its just a bear to put it all together. Man, I am always impressed by what you you guys know. I just hope some how I can collect it in some sort of readable way...and make all these connections about the U-17-U19 boats the designers and the various owners and their connections the greater world of boat making. After the Chisholms it was Corp Boat card trading on the designs. I still find the study interesting.......

Now that you own a 21GT this may be an opportune time to ask this question.
Do you have any idea of the production numbers for the 21 GT?

I did the 7 meter, Harry Schoell did the Spitfire/Pescador. Stinkin' is a play on words from the "We don't need no stinkin' guns....." We didn't need no stinkin' outboards.... Nothing personal. I wish I had a 16' Baby (named for my raceboat, Donzi Baby) with a 2.5 offshore merc w/ sportmaster.
