Alpha SS Drive

Will I have any problems converting from a Type R outdrive to a an alpha SS? I will be changing the gimbal housing too. Any opinions of this drive unit?

I changed from a stock Alpha 1 drive to the SS drive and it changed my 18 classic big time. I could use props that I could never use before, the hole shot was better and I gained 7-8 mph on top speed. It's a bolt on conversion, raises the X dimension 2 1/2 to 3 inches and if you can get your hands on one go for it. I haven't had the stock drive on my Donzi for years, ever since I got the SS drive. I sent the check for it Friday, he shipped it yesterday, and it is supposed to be here next Wednesday. Can't wait to try out this new engine and drive. Should be quite a difference going from a stock 305 two barrel to a 350/330 hp with the SS drive. Any suggestions on what prop to start with? The boat is a Formula 20 SC, 1981.

Cuda, I spoke to a prop guy out here and he mentioned that some of the props, like the Mirage are heavy and when shifting from forward to reverse is what causes alot of wear on the Alpha drives. He said that the Laser 2 props were designed lighter and designed for use on the Alpha drives. But then again, the only reason I was talking to him is because I answered a "Going out of Business" ad in the local paper. Anybody else have any input? Like many others, I too will be looking for a prop before too ling. Greg

I'm using a 3-blade cleaver on my SS equipped '72 16 with great success. GeneD runs a Mirage on his '66 18 with an SS which too seems to work well on his setup.

I run a Hydromotive 22 4 Blade with my SS
I do have a 23 Mirage it has a good midrange
but it dosen't carry a load or have the top end the Hydromotive has. ;)
