Here is another example of my pet peve: http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=332291678
70mph? If people would stop lying then my pathetic low 60's would sound so much better.
Nice boat though.

I'm sure that boat really does do 70... By the way, did I tell you guys that I can bench press 1000 lbs.?

Bertram I thought you could bench press 1500? He must be a boat salesman? When i bought mine? My boat was in the 70s, The only time my boat seen 70s is when I supercharged it.Normally in the 60s And I have a 454 with a Step bottom. Fast 350?

70???? NFW

However, with the Small Block, you can easily see how a swim platform would fit above the pipes...

How accurate do you guys feel your speedometers are? My 22 with a 502 says 65 without any trimming and what little time I have driven it once I had it up to 70.

Boy! those GPSs sure do level the playing field.
Pete my speedo says 80, GPS says 73.4.

I haven't checked the milage yet. It is supposed to be better if you keep your foot out of it. Before the upgrades 16.5 highway, 11.5 pulling the 18 on the interstate @78MPH. The 4WD really hurts mileage and my diesel is a non-electronic engine.
My right leg is sore from mashing the throttle down all day.
I cannot believe the difference in power. I'll bet my 0 to 70 times were cut in 1/2.
Feels like I have my 18's 454 in the truck http://206.150.187.82/ubb/eek.gif
Hey, mabe I need to head south to see what my interstate mileage is!

I saw this in boattraderonline and had to take a double take on the claim of speed.

What's a 2-speed I/O?

We spent last weekend with this guy, without the boat. He claims he bought it right off of ESPN, I didn't know ESPN sold boats, and it will do 110 MPH at 3700ft elevation. Gota love those NASCAR engines.

Wow! a 90+MPH 16 Donzi . . . Man, I must have missed something somewhere when I did the setup on my 16. I wonder how I can get another 30 MPH out of it? Any suggestions? Oh, "Two-speed I/O" must mean that it goes both in forward and reverse.

While it's quite possible the gentleman with the Donzi has a two speed tranny(very expensive), I still find it hard to believe the thind does 90. If it does have the 2 speed tranny, I think the hull still has a "speed limit", does anyone know what that is?

Now that Velocity on the other hand, that's quite an interesting piece. A buddy of mine has a 30 Velocity which was built in the 80's and it's quite a heavy boat. He's got a single big block(and I mean big) in it and it does high 70's low 80's---(no exaggeration!), so it is possible that it is a 90+ boat---but then again, there is a limit at what that hull can do. If I recall correctly, the 30 is a real handful at 80.

Those NASCAR motors would be real cool---for about 1 season(500 miles!), I dreamed about putting them in my Cigarette, but nothing beats cubic inches.

Rick, S,
I was looking at different performance kits for my 2000, F350 Turbo Diesel. I've seen ads for Gale Banks and ATS. Some kits have exhaust, larger turbo's, larger intercooler, injectors ect.. Do these mods void the warranty? How does the ATS kit work?? GEOO

Sean O,
Hull speed is a funny topic. I don't think Don designed the classic for 50 or 60mph. He was trying to go as fast as he could. A 18 Donzi is a handfull at WOT with full trim, it doesn't matter if your going 55 or 75mph. At 75 things just happen a lot faster. I've heard of 18 Classic with a jet drive going over 100mph. That 16 with 289ci can not go 90 unless it's a Indy type 700+ hp. GEOO

what about the 2 speed tranny? I don't know much about them, the big cats were using them for racing for low end torque in the corners, they would downshift into the corners on the racecourse and as soon as they got out of the corner, they would shift it and fly...but with this type of application, would you really need 700+hp to get to 90mph?

In my old ski boat racing days, there were people running B&M Power Glides that were designed (according to B&M) for Marine use. We used a set of 20% over drive gears in our v-drive, so a "low" gear would have been great. Plus it would have been nice to have a reverse. Drag boats run these so they can come out of the hole with some control and then "gear up" fo the top end run. rj

SeanO,
I think a 16 would need around 550-600 hp to go 90mph with a Bravo. A 18 needs 500hp with a Alpha SS to go 84mph. GEOO

Seano, there is not enough room in a 16 for any kind of transmission with an I/O, much less a two speed. But you know, since it was built in '68, that boat could be a V-drive boat, which in that case, may be possible. But not 90 MPH!!!!

Also, I don't think that a 16 could ever safely hit 80 MPH much less 90 MPH no matter how much power is applied. The boat is just too short for the 24-degree bottom to go fast. Faster you go in the 16, the higher the boat will ride until the point there is no (or very little) water contacting the hull. How many 70 MPH 16 Donzis do you know of? I'm sure that the hull could be modified with a pad, but then its rough water capability would go straight to hell and it just wouldn't be a Donzi any more.

Speaking of pads, Velocity boats have a pad and a stepped transom. That will definitely help with the top end speed. There is a 22' or 24' Velocity around here with a 454/Bravo. Nice boat and it's fast. I've seen him a mile or two out in the Gulf but only on the smoothest of days. You can usually find him up in the river where the water skiers, tubers, and hot outboards go.

I think we've beat this on to death and I think you guys are right...there's no chance of that donzi doing 90! LOL

The pad in that Velocity is what makes it uncontrolable at high speeds.

Another buddy of mine had a 26 Seebold Eagle with a pair of 2.4 Bridgeports on brackets, and that boat did an honest 82 mph, but once again it was a bear to run. You really had to steer it at WOT cause without the v, it was searching for a place to go---chine-walked and wanted to go sideways! It was alot of fun though---he almost tossed me out of it in the ocean one day---launched it off a wave and it came down sideways----he turned the wheel in the air like a knucklehead and as soon as we landed, it turned hard to starboard---i thought I broke my ribs! LOL
