Big Marc, Technically, speed has absolutely nothing to do with your success in a Poker Run! The Reality is another story! Object: Is to get the highest "Poker" hand, you go to designated stops(restaurants/bars/Marinas) and pick up a sealed envelop which contains a playing card. Upon successfully gathering cards from all ports of call, you return to the Scene of the Crime and Party your !@$%#*Off, and share stories of that days Poker Run. All participants turn in their cards to a central person who records and announces the results, it's fun and very random! Now what actually happens is...all of the above but, some boats are bigger than others, some faster than others, this creates a need for staged starts based on usually boats size and or anticipated speed/ability of getting to each Card Stop! It becomes a balls to the wall Power fest, at many points, but it is a blast! You do have to be careful and watch out for idiots!!! , Not everyone is as experienced and or as safety conscious as they should be! Generally alcohol during the run is prohibited and will disqualify your boat! They are great experiences and a totally unique time each time. Hope this makes some sense? :D ...Doc

Marc, The NJPPC is one of the largest Poker Run clubs on the East/Coast with over 250 members and boats ranging from 13ft to 60ft and speeds starting at 20mph to 187 mph, The fastest cat in the country Jet Set. The Poker Run experience is something that every boater should feel. We have rules that must be followed at all times, No Drinking, Life jackets must be worn, Kill switches operational and in use you must keep a safe distance between boats, Never pass the pace boats when flag is up, respect all your fellow boaters, Follow all the laws of the water. With all that said. We start off with a great breakfast a Captains meeting and maps. We usally have between 60-75 boats. We try to keep it under a 100 boats to keep the Poker run more under control, Sometimes 3 starts. The 100 mph club the 70 mph club and the inside croup about 25 boats. then we have 5 designated pick up spots with cards that are sealed in envelope, with helicopters blazing in the air next to your boat taking videos and the sound of other performance boats next to you gives you that offshore race feeling, We run at 45 to 60 mph in our group and watch out for each other, If someone goes down we will see if we can help before we continue, Poker Runners are friends first, Most Poker runs are a minimum of 70 miles with some as long as 140 both ways, Then its party time after the run! The new boating expierence is Fun Runs 25-30 boats doing the same thing with out spending money.

Wow Frank, Your Runs sound fun! Maybe we could do one this year, where would I find a schedule for the 2002 Season? Marc, you should definitley attend AOTH II, always a good time when a Group of the Donzi Dogs gather! :D It's like an eleventh commandment or something! Don't worry if you don't have a boat, usually there is plenty of hitchhiking room on peoples boats!... wink ...Doc

Frank is right, I participate in special poker run every year. The only catch is that you must make the run in a dingy. We also put a different twist on it, there are no scheduled stops. You are given clues as to where you will find an envelope with the cards inside. The cards are in envelopes as well (no cheating). This is a great time for all, young and old they all get to help out. We also offer some other options as well such as water balloon launchers are encouraged as well as other water projecting devices, I think you get my drift.

Poker Runs, great topic...
(you can see through those envelopes, buy two hands and you can figure the best pairing!)!!
I have seen folks cheat for a $10 watch, all other funds went to charity!
Ethical?

Holes in the cards is a better idea, they must match for hand one, two or three etc!

Hey MARCUPS, let us know soon on SML the house is filling fast, Nancy keeps pilling in girlfriends....
We are locked in on the Condo, all dues are paid and would love to share your company with lots of MORE Donzi talk. Give us a call soon.

Wow Frank, now that sounds like a tamed Poker Run. The Jay Miller Poker Run we have out on Cape Cod is basically a moderate battle from the starting point to where you get your fourth card on Martha’s Vineyard with no rhyme or reason to which of the 40 to 50 boats go first (17’ Bayliners to 50’ Cougars). Once we are done for a couple hours hanging out in Oak Bluffs we get radioed in for the last all out battle to head back in to Falmouth threw the Woods hole. Some don’t make it in like the Cat named “Triple Digits” a few years back that hit the Ferryboat’s wake and did the old flip-er-rooskey and did not make it back upright if you know what I mean. I’ve had some pretty wild rides in this Poker Run and some I can’t believe that we made it (my two front teeth didn’t make it back one year, thank god for porcelain crown teeth!). Lots of great stories from this Poker Run.

A poker run is planned for AOTH II, but with a little bit of a different format due to some help and concerns by others. All rules that Frank descriped will be in effect. The difference is going to be that no cards will be handed out at the different stops. As pointed out by others, it just isn't fair to ask people attending the event to have to work by handing out cards. Everyone will have the opportunity to tour Lake Cumberland with the rest of the gang. We will go to 5 different locations on the lake including a lunch stop at one of them. The final stop will be back at the Jamestown Resort and here is where for a $5.00 entrance fee, you will be able to pick 5 cards from a pile on a table. Your cards will be recorded and then we'll have a good dinner along with awards. This way everyone enjoys the day (Including Me) and very little help other than maybe a couple lead and follow boats are required. All collected monies will be divided between the top 3 card hands and you can purchase as many hands as you wish. Looks like we'll have helicopter photography for those special pictures of you and your passengers enjoying your Donzi. This is the best way I could come up with so that everyone can make the run and no one is required to sit at a marina handing out cards. :)

Scott B, sounds GREAT...
Bring lots of cards or ask for packs of new cards as donations, I think most will buy more than one hand to make it exciting!
Thanks for all the work Scott B.

Scott,
When you say all rules as suggested by Frank C. will apply...does that include the kill switch requirement?

Tony,
If your SkiSporter doesn't have a kill switch installed, I'm not going to say you can't go on the lake tour with us. I will however recommend installing one. They are not expensive and in my opinion could save not only you and people riding with you, but also your beautiful Donzi. I hit a cruiser wake once and found myself hanging outside my boat by the grab rail. I was lucky and able to reach the throttle to stop my boat. I looked up Mercury marine and bought an outboard kill switch the next day. It wires into the coil and has a cap that when pulled off it's mount shuts down the engine. Just my .02 cents worth.

Scott B is right, you should install one. I put one on my 68 and Its a great piece of mind. They are simple to install and not alot of money.

The kill switch will be part of my re-power project. Now I just hope and pray it will all come together in time for Kentucky!
