Maybe in wrong area due to general question but? Besides low speed steering what is benefit to have dual set up? 2 400HP enginges as opposed to a single 400HP, how does it affect top end? Less stress?? Thanks

400 more hp. :)

I would think a single 400 HP setup would be faster than a dual 400 HP setup merely because there is one less outdrive in the water causing drag. The outdrive has significant drag. I'm assuming that you meant a single engine boat versus a twin engine boat with both boats having a total HP of 400. If you mean a 400 HP singe versus an 800 HP twin, then I think the answer is a no-brainer.

well I would compare it to women,
yeah one is fun but two is twice as much fun :p wink :D also consider the safety factor if one leaves you, you can get back on the other, of course unless they're like matty's women and they both leave at the same time

2x as much work, maintence, etc

I would bet less stress on each motor, both can spin approx 100rpm more than a single (same motor/prop etc)

I don't know how right the techs in school were but this is what we were told. Matching HP 1 400 vs two 200's. 85% more fuel, 15% more drag from second lower slower but reliable get home power. Brings to mind a tug I worked on years back had 4 671's hooked through a French tranny to 1 prop which was a rotating nozzle. You could run any combo 1 to 4 depending on load. Theory may have been the same not sure.

Hyper you run alot more pitch on twin setups and have to run home easy if one quits or you will kill the good one. Example 32 Baha twin 454 350 turns 4400 both but 2700 wound up on one. You have to run about 16-1800 to get home pretty slow.

With equivalent horsepower in each boat, there is no good reason to get a twin, unless you are making long runs offshore, then only for the safety factor. The single will be faster, cost half as much to maintain, less fuel and easier to work on.

------While all the stuff you say is somewhat true,Cuda,Ill take the twin any time!
------In my 24 I would have to have a 500HP motor to equal my two.Personally,I feel that 500HP is stretching a motor a bit. While I love the sound of a 500HP big-block the longevity is suspect. Two 250s on the other hand are tame and understressed.Plus,I love the sound of twin V8s,even mild ones........Bill S

Let's not forget about stability. The torque cancelling of the twin setup makes the boat a TON more stable. And yes, 2 motors should be twice as much work, but somehow in real life it seems like 3X more work. Yeah, the good news is you always come home. Just remember, even with 2 motors, you still only have only 1 gas tank!!! Haven't done that move yet, but I've seen it wink

Red, don't misunderstand me, I'm a twin guy all the way. :) Ever since getting the 242 with twins (and I was looking for a single), I can't see how I could go back. Now we have the 302 and I love it when you fire up those two BBC's at the ramp! :)

There are a couple scenarios where twins won't get you back, one being the gas situation as pointed out by McGary, the other is a steering problem. :(

Twins are more than twice as much maintanence, because they are also twice as hard to work on, so the formula would be 1x2x2=4 times as much work. :) You gotta love it, otherwise it makes no sense! :D

McGary, when you decide to go the twin route..

I have ready CASH for your Criterion.

In fact, I'd be damn happy to cash you out right now :D

M.O.P.:

You have to run about 16-1800 to get home pretty slow. I meant in the way of on a different boat. Lets say V with single 400hp BB, 1.5 etc proped to say...5000WOT, then twin 400BB, 1.5, same props will run 5100WOT.
