Have any Classic 18 owners installed a stereo power amp ? Best locations, mounting prefs
etc.?

I have a used US Amps 4 channel, 360 watt unit (2.5x9.5x14.5"), and would like to mount it
underneath the dash out of site, but the space is limited. Any Ideas?

Tailwind, This is how Imounted them in a 22c. Two amps. one 12" Polk sub. and CD changer. Maybe it will give you some ideas. http://www.donzi.net/photos/mhorne.jpg

I dont know why I have such a hard time with this. I think it may have to do with RENAMING. My wife tells me im comp.challenged. She may be rite.

I searched back and can't find any posts on downsizing photos. Can't seem to reduce any of my existing photos.

frmrtx,

Nice setup! You just had an extra .jpg at the end of your file so I resized the picture, took out the .jpg and sent it back up there :D

I have a VERY similar setup in my 22... only I monted the amps on the other side, so I could still use that little storage space...

Tailwind,
I have an 18, and my amp is under the rear seat to the right of the battery. It is out of sight and harms way. There is a little extra wiring to do but the limited space in the 18, it is not a bad choice. Also, my amp was just a hair wider than the compartment so I raised it up an inch or so with some wooden spacers. This also left a gap underneath for wiring to run.

Tidbitnh.. Great idea for the AMP location on the 18. How about speaker mounting location? Any creative ideas?

I have been researching this on my 18 as well. I am going to fab some brackets for box speakers to sit under the dash, on top of the foot wells. I did not want to cut the hull. I think I may put the head unit in a gimbal mount and try to hang it under the dash. Before I attempt any of these maneuvers, I will try to find some local stereo guru for advice.

frmrtx,

You may be computer challanged, but you did a hell of a job with that stereo. I bet it cranks.

sagbag32.. I have thought about the same exact thing. West Marine and Boaters World sell a decent waterproof self contained box speaker that comes with a cheezy mounting bracket. The speaker has a few holes in the back of it to mount to. There is not much back there to solidly mount up to. All I came up with was running two flat braces up the backside of the foot well then bent to mount to the speaker. This requires holes in the footwell. It would be under the snap in carpet for me. I do not want holes. I do not want holes. I am as original as it gets with no holes so far. Just the two for the fire extiquisher. And I pretend the factory installed it. :D :D

This is a topic I will closely follow. I will post pics if I come up with anything better.

The speaker locations that came with the boat are, 2 behind the front seats, in the gunnels (surface mounted), 2 under the dash mounted to the kick panel (bracket mounted), an a subwoofer up in the front of the ski storage area. Needless to say I don't do much skiing. These locations work. They are some options anyway.

Bob, have you ever come across a high quality surface mount speaker (for the gunnels) that comes with a cover for non-use, washing, skiing, etc.?

Hey guys: thanks for all of the helpfull tips here.

My current thoughts are:

1. Fasten the amp to a piece of plyboard, attached to the foam foward of the footwell using a caulking product "liquid nail". Have used this sucsessfullly with even salt water emersion in flounder gigging lights.
2. Fabricate a skeletal mounting system using alum extrusions, and attaching to the dash, footwell areas.
3. Battery box area- Thanks Tidbitin ! good alternative, plenty of room, no further issues. Probably the best so far !
4. Speakers: gosh sore subject - Have Alpines, clip at over 50 % power (20 WATTS) "CHEAP"
Alternatives: Infinity marine, Bose marine, & perhaps a better solution: MB Quart. For the best sensitivity level (94db) however they will require 75 watts to drive them, thus an aux amp. This at full power which none of us really use.

Alpine does have a new 65 x 4 head unit available shortly, however am skeptical about the ultimate performance in our "DONZIS". I guess the bottom line here would enforce the idea that if you really want clear hi fidelity stereo sound in your DONZI , that it will indeed require a separate amplifier. Anything less , while may provide a suitable engine off sound, will certainly not provide a suitable alternative.

Waiting for the fallout

Randy,
It sounds like you are a Man with a plan.
I was crawling around under my dash and think that I am going to do exactly as you, with the
locations.
I did find the waterproof gimbal mount for the stereo a little cheaper
Stereo gimbal (http://www.cyber-marine.com/bridges/16500.html)
I think I will try that.

JP, No I haven't found any with covers. Then again, I haven't been looking either. I know there are waterproofs out there that will take a direct spray and still work. I don't know about the quality of sound from them though. Bob

An Amp is a definate MUST if you want decent sound. Head unit power is overrated. Poly speakers will hold up to the boating environment quite well. Would I be committing some sort of crime if I mount some subs under the rear seat facing fowards? the boat is under construction needing a motor and the outdrive fixed. But i was thinking about hoking up some tunes so I do not have to whistle while I work.
