Two simple, quick questions:

What years did they (Volvo) produce a 250 drive?

and

What years for a 270 drive?

Mattyboy,

It does. Trying to determine if my 270 might actually be a 250. How embarrassing! They're so similar and since my serial # is gone (worn away)and the ole' shift cover plate was a Holman Moody Marine Plate, I can't tell for sure. The reason I'm questioning is that I've always thought that my drive was a 270, but I've discovered, during my "project" that the diameter of my drive yoke splines (and bolt, and crush washer, and seal washer...) are slightly smaller than the ones of several used Volvo 270 drive yokes I've been able to locate. Dis be a bummer! Could've had a "new used" drive yoke for $15.00 but wouldn't fit! The search goes on.

Son of a gun! I just noticed on the boat's little aluminum ID tag (on the ski storage wall) that my tag says "OUTDRIVE NUMBER 2510963."

An old outdrive tech. recently told me that the first numbers of Volvo AQ's serial # tells the drive model.

That is, a 270 should begin with "2-7-0", a 250, "2-5-0". etc.

I'd be convinced by this that mine's is a 250 except that only the first 2 numbers are "2-5", the third is a "1" and not an "0".

Maybe that's close enough. Does anybody know?

With regard to the aluminum ID tag, keep in mind, this is the old Cobalt. I've noticed their tag was done just a bit different from Donzi even though they copied the boat.

Again, does anybody know about how the serial numbers read on the old Volvo? Is the above info. correct? Could it just be the first 2 numbers?

if that is the original drive I would say you have a 250 on it judging by that number

I'm leaning that way. Still haven't heard from anyone re: the different spline, bolt, crush washer, etc. size??

Is this a mystery. If I order stuff for a 250, am I going to get the smaller diameter stuff?

U-joints, etc, etc, are the same for all from what I can see, but this has me confused. Maybe a good "old parts" Volvo dealer can tell me if the 250's drive yoke spline diameter is smaller.

This will effect several parts I need to get it back together.

Anybody know?

They are the same and available from NAPA

U-joints are the same, yes, but what I'm mainly getting at is that the spline and, therefore, the screw(bolt), crush washer and the washer seal that goes between the drive yoke and the gear are definitely different (at least the one in my drive is). It looks the same but just a slightly smaller diameter. Hasn't anybody else ever run into this?
